Richard was born on November 3, 1938 in Oneonta, NY. He was the first born son of Arcie and Mildred Smallin. A lifelong resident of Oneonta, Richard attended Chestnut Street School and Oneonta Junior/Senior High School, graduating in 1956. He attended SUNY Oneonta, graduating with honors with a Masters Degree in Education in 1960. Richard then went on to become a lifelong educator as a science teacher until his retirement.
Forever curious, Richard had endless passions and interests that brought joy to his life and even more joy when he could share his knowledge and interests with others. Growing up, he loved spending time at Goodyear Lake, where he water-skied and boated. He was a dedicated lifeguard at Pine Lake and the YMCA. Richard was an avid classic car enthusiast and builder, attending car shows across the country. He custom painted fenders and motorcycle tanks, enjoyed woodworking and carpentry, and was an avid astronomer, building several telescopes. Richard also enjoyed coin and stamp collecting. Above all, he loved his family and spending time outdoors.
Richard is predeceased by his parents and aunt, Marion. He is survived by his loving wife, Neri; daughter, Crystal Smallin; brother and sister-in-law, John and Betty Smallin; sole grandson, Mason; and many nieces and nephews.
At the family's request, there will not be calling hours. A private celebration of Richard's life will be held at a later date.
