William R. Schaffer

He was born September 22, 1922 in Wells Bridge the son of John and Hazel (Baker) Schaffer.

He married Evelyn Wood on November 21, 1942.

He was a veteran of World War II serving with the US Army.

Bill was a retired employee from NYSEG in Oneonta where he worked for many years.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Oneonta.

Most of his adult life was devoted to scouting. He was Scoutmaster of Troop 27, chartered with Valleyview School for more than 15 years. He was the recipient of scouting’s Silver Beaver and had the honor of being a Wood Badge Scoutmaster.

He served on the Executive Board of the Otschodela Council, and was a Council Commissioner for many years, as well as serving on numerous other committees.

Bill was recently inducted into the National Hall of Leadership, an award given to only 300 people nationwide.

He is survived by his wife Evelyn Schaffer of Oneonta; a son Jeffrey W. Schaffer and his fiancé, Theresa Chicorelli of Catskill; two brothers, John Schaffer of Williams, AZ, and Earl Schaffer of Allentown, PA.

He is also survived by several nieces and nephew

A funeral service will be held on Friday, May 13, 2011 at 10:00 AM in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta with the Rev. Teressa Sivers, officiating.

Burial with military honors will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta.
