Debbie was born Debra Joyce Batten on January 24, 1953 in West Covina, California. Her family moved to Upland in the early 1960s, where she attended Sierra Vista Elementary, Pioneer Junior High, and Upland High school. She graduated from high school in 1971 and went to Chaffey Junior College and Cal Poly University in Pomona, where she majored in Behavioral Science. She married Keith Mutrux on December 7, 1974 and finished her Bachelor’s degree in 1975.
Debbie worked at Eader’s Bakery and Gemmel Pharmacy while going to school. After graduation, she became an academic counselor at Chaffey College and then was a stay-at-home mom when her children Brandon and Melissa were born. After her kids were in school, Debbie worked as a pharmaceutical sales rep and later a substitute teacher. In the early 1990s, she went back to school and received her teaching credential in elementary school education. She taught Kindergarten and First Grade at Magnolia Elementary School for twenty years, where she touched numerous lives. She was dedicated to her students, and she loved her years as a teacher. Her students would come back to visit her even years later, after graduating high school and college. She retired in 2014 and spent her time camping at the beach, traveling, and taking cruises. She loved being called Nana by her 3 grandsons.
Debbie was preceded in death by her parents Donald H. and Tess A. Batten. She is survived by her husband Keith Mutrux; son Brandon Mutrux and his wife Elizabeth with their 3 boys Malachi, Elijah, and Micah of San Diego; daughter Melissa Mutrux of Upland; and brothers Bradford Craig Batten of Estacada, Oregon and Dr. Donald Gary Batten of Lake Arrowhead, California.
She went home to our Lord on February 22, 2024 and will be missed more than words can express.
