Born on November 10, 1967, in Los Angeles, California, Derek lived a life defined by quiet strength, loyalty, and deep love for his family. He graduated from California State University, San Bernardino, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting.
Derek had a lifelong passion for sports. His home was filled with games year-round, as he faithfully followed his beloved Los Angeles teams—the Dodgers, Angels, Lakers, Kings, Ducks, and Rams. Above all, his greatest enthusiasm was for horse racing. Each year, he eagerly anticipated the Kentucky Derby and the Breeders’ Cup, two events he cherished deeply. Some of his most treasured moments were spent at Santa Anita Park alongside his father, enjoying the excitement of the races together.
A quiet and reserved man, Derek spoke few words, but his actions reflected what mattered most to him—his family. He is survived by his loving mother, Edna Sakai, and his sister, Megan Sakai.
Derek’s life will be honored in the memories of those who knew him, and his presence will be deeply missed with enduring love.
