Peter and my sis, Rosemary, were great athletes.  We shared many adventures and trips with them.  Peter never kept score during a golf game, but we all knew he was the winner.  We rafted down the white water of the Salmon River in Idaho.  Peter loved relaxing in the thermal pools after our challenging trip.  We were on the slopes with Peter and Rosemary in Colorado (Steamboat Springs, Winter Park) and in California at Heavenly Valley.  Peter loved any body of water and swam frequently.  Peter always seemed to have us in tow--time to stop for hot chocolate, time to stretch our legs, looks like a good restaurant.... We happily obliged  and loved his leadership.
Peter was also a standup comedian.  Once when I was making really good golf drives (unusual for me) he said,  "What were you doing last night?  Out here practicing!"  I  took Peter and Rosemary through a pretty reserve in Stevens Point and promised them they would see a little green tree frog.  Well, it did not happen and Peter refused to leave and said, "I want to see my promised little green tree frog."  We were skiing in Heavenly with Peter and Justin (our grandson).  The 4 of us came upon a steep, narrow downhill run and I was told not to try to turn.  The terrain was such a blurr that I felt I needed to slow down, so I tried to turn and down I went.  I kept my skis in front of me and at the bottom the guys grabbed my arms and stood me up.  We went over to an adjacent lift and the operator said that was a great trick.  Peter laughed the hardest, because it really was nothing more than a spectacular fall--my best one ever.
In Stevens Point, WI we enjoyed a meal with Peter and Rosemary at an Austrian restaurant.  Peter selected a veal dish and loved every bite.  The chef came to our table.  Peter's words of appreciation lit up the chef's face.  Peter--ever gracious and appreciative.
Peter left in his wake wonderful memories that Bill and I cherish.  Mil gracias, dear Peter.  Shalom darling Rosemary. 

On one of our few family trips from the Bay Area to Southern California, about 40 years ago, I recall staying with Peter in what I believe was Hollywood.  I was only a kid then and I don't remember the details, but I do recall being enchanted by what seemed to be a tropical environment and a swimming pool at the apartment complex where he lived.  Years later, another visit to Peter had us staying at his home in Glendale, and a pool was nearby - a short walk from his front door.  And, more recently (and now with kids of my own in tow), we had the good fortune of visiting dear uncle Peter (and wonderful, charming, wise and supportive Rosemary) in Rancho Cucamonga.  The swimming pool at his home was a hit for our children, and Peter wanted to make sure that our kids could use it and enjoy themselves.  He went out of his way to ensure that our kids could swim in his pool, as he so enjoyed swimming himself and as he was so kind and thoughtful towards others.

Fortunately, we had a couple visits with Peter over the past year and I was blown away by his smile - which is truly perhaps the finest and warmest smile I've seen.  His smile was a reflection of who he was.  Peter was kind, gentle, humble, quietly supportive...  These are rare and precious traits.  He was exceptionally accommodating and respectful.  He was humorous and his smile and spirit was infectious and soothing.  He was truly a gentleman in so many ways.  I was happy to see a glimpse of his life in Rancho Cucamonga and touched by Rosemary and Peter's wonderful relationship.  It was an honor to have had Peter as an uncle!  We send our love to Rosemary and her family.

I first remember my lovely brother Peter when he was one year old  and my last memory was when he was 86. He was cute, unassuming, and smiling both times, characteristics of his entire productive life. He was the first member of our family born in the US, not necessarily a good position with WW2 about to happen and his parents distracted, grandparents all in Europe, grandparents of whom he had no memory. He survived the obstacles; he was too intelligent not to. His marriage to Rosemary helped him immensely.And now he's gone, a fond memory of a beautiful, kind, and generous man. My aunt met Peter on a Sierra Club hike.  I’ve always been glad she went hiking that day, because Peter came into our lives. Always a good listener and story teller, He was fun to golf with, knew the best restaurants in the LA area and was always a gracious host when we visited. He was very kind to me, my son and parents. Thank you for everything Peter. Our world was better because you were in it. We love You and miss you terribly.

I first met Peter over 25 years ago when I married his oldest stepdaughter Debbie. I quickly realized what a kind and humble man Peter was. He was always generous to his entire family and was there whenever  they needed him. I don’t recall ever hearing Peter ask for anything, he only offered himself to help others. People like Peter are far and few between and I for one will never forget this kind and gentle man. My condolences  to his closest family and in particular his beloved wife Rosemary to whom he obviously loved and was very committed. Rest in peace Peter.

Peter was a very precious family member.  We spent many holidays & birthdays with our mutual family members.  He was always kind & loving.  He was very intelligent & his medical knowledge was always helpful.  We are so grateful to have known him and he will be missed.  Our family sends our love to Rosemary  and the family, as we know they  are missing him.  Rest is Peace Peter.

As a child, I couldn’t say “Peter” thus Grandpa Peep was born. He was the only, and best, grandfather I had. He was quick-witted, humble, and always there to chat and inquire about the lives of myself and sister. I remember him laughing when we tried to speak German together, falling asleep to a football game (but never a golf tournament!) and admittedly at the wheel, and faithfully eating his Haagen Das at every birthday and holiday.  He brought music into the lives of my sister and I, including the little piano I will cherish for the rest of my life. I will sit at that piano and think of sweet Grandpa Peep every time I play. Ich liebe dich von ganzem Herzen, Grandpa Peep. You are so very missed

Peter was a wonderful man and was my daughters grandpa for all intents.   He was always asking them about school and music.  He always chose great places to go out to eat, which he loved to do.   He was gracious and humble.  I will miss having my wingman at my side when walking to restaurants.  

Peter was essentially the only grandfather I ever knew. I do not remember when I was told he was not my biological relative, because it never mattered. He was sweet, kind and bright. He taught me how to shuffle cards. Every time I had the chance to see him he asked how I was doing, what I was up to and wanted to engage. I am heartbroken that he is gone but I know his memory will live on fondly in all who knew him. I for one will think of him every time I shuffle cards. I love you Grandpa Peep.

Per his wishes, there will be no headstone to mark the passing of his life. Akin to other souls, his memory will swirl around us like so many fallen leaves, until we, too, fall, and the testament we carry in our hearts for him will be known no more.
He inherited our raucous and eccentric family, initially embracing us with what appeared to be mixture of bemusement and quizzical reluctance. Who were all of these wild, opinionated, passionate people who now considered themselves as part of his pack?
We learned quickly that from his honored place at the head of every meal celebration, this quiet and unassuming man could match us wit for wit, story for story. He loved to laugh, and we loved to make him laugh.
His manners were impeccable, always thanking us for the littlest of things we did for him. He marveled over every gift we gave him. It was fun to give him gifts.
We were also the grateful recipients of his medical advice and genuine concern whenever one of us was ill or injured. He would research our maladies, make suggestions, even offer to pay for second opinions or things he felt would help us feel better.
He excelled as a grandfather, quietly attending births, birthday parties and school events. Not naturally demonstrative, he seemed touched by each and every goodbye kiss and "Happy Birthday, Grandpa Peep" card he was given.
(You really can't say anything negative about a man who gleefully jumped up and down on "poppy-paper" hidden under a rug, can you? Or one who performed in beginning piano recitals with peers 70 years younger than him?)
Doctor Peter Kornell Terplan was living proof that sharing genes is not required to hold father or grandfather status. Nor, in Peter's case, are shared genes required for me to mourn the loss of one of the most important members of my family.
Peter loved classical music, so I will borrow from Mozart's Requiem to bid him adieu:
May eternal light shine on them, O Lord. 
with Thy saints for ever, because
Thou art merciful.
