She worked in the kitchen at GM for 10 years, and then continued her work at Cardinal Vending Services, doing what she loved: baking and cooking for all. Maxine had a sweet hand at making the best desserts for her family and friends. Most special were her signature pumpkin pie recipe that had been in the family for years, her pineapple upside down cake and her “best cake” recipes. Maxine would stay up all night baking to make sure that each one of her family members had delicious desserts on their tables for special holidays.
Maxine could cook for the largest family gatherings with several special dishes requested by many. The number one favorite was her famous sloppy joes. Potatoes cooked in many ways was everyone’s favorite: fried, scalloped and her special potato soup. Remembering things like “you can never have too much butter for your mashed potatoes” was one of her secrets. Maxine loved when someone would call for a recipes or ask how to do something in the kitchen. Teaching her grandchildren how to cook and bake was special to her. She catered most of her family’s weddings, graduations and birthday parties, creating the most beautiful displays of food.
Maxine had a green thumb as well. She loved her orchids and lilies and always had an abundance of color in her flowerbeds that both she and her husband, Paul, had spent many hours tending every year.
Maxine and Paul traveled to many states in their younger years, sharing and creating many treasured memories with their son and grandchildren. The beach was her favorite destination—as long as she could watch the waves and sit in the sun, she was happy. Maxine also loved to shop for her family, especially at Christmas. She made sure if someone needed or wanted something, they had it.
Maxine was the strongest fighter in every obstacle in life and health from a child to the end. She played an outstanding role as a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great grandmother.
She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Paul E. Haycook whom she married on June 19, 1954; son, David (Rose) Haycook; grandchildren, Tara (Lief) Hartley, Cathy Haycook, Michael (Angie) Ray, and Angie (Shane) Patrick; great-grandchildren, Briana Brauchler (Nick), Brooklyn Wright (Nathan), Christina (Kevin) Sisak, Kristin Burton, Victoria Howard, Emily Gibson, and David Ray; great-great grandchildren, Hudson, Kennedy, Hunter, Hayden, Denali, Adaline and two to come, Leo and Colten; many, many others who called her “grandma” over the years that she had adopted as grandchildren; brother, Bill Compton; as well as many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by sisters, Donna Massey, Juanita Kegley and Neva Parker; brother, Bob Compton; and lastly, her beloved dog Daisy.
The family will receive friends from 9:00-10:00 a.m. on Monday, May 23, 2022, at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 100 S. Lexington-Springmill Road. The funeral service will follow at 10:00 a.m. She will be laid to rest in Mansfield Cemetery.
