Lill was born in Endicott, NY to Saul and Frieda (Mager) Berkowitz on May 4, 1925. She married Jacob Brownstein on July 29, 1945 in Monterey, California where Jack was stationed during WWII. Lill graduated from Brooklyn College in the 1940s, becoming a New York City schoolteacher, a job she loved and for which she won many awards. Lill was a wonderfully creative teacher, known for organizing many successful student plays and performances. She retired from P.S. 232 in Howard Beach, Queens, NY in 1988. Lill's passion for teaching saw her start a Write Your Life Story class for senior citizens in Orange City, FL, when she retired. She also delighted in politics and for years was an election worker at a local polling station.
Lillian was preceded in death by her parents, Saul and Frieda; her husband, Jack; and her son-in-law, Leonard Cohen.
Lill is survived by her two daughters, Susan F. Cohen of Deltona, FL, and Jessica H. Renaud of Philadelphia, PA; her grandchildren Johanna Cohen and Matthew Cohen (Corey) and her great-grandchildren, Kyleigh Cohen and Landon Cohen.
Lill is missed by all who loved her.
