A DeLand native, he was born February 12, 1930 to Homer and LaVar Smith.
Walter earned his private pilots license at 16 years of age and graduated from Carlisle Military School in Bamberg, SC. He graduated from Officers Candidate School and received his commission in the U.S. Air Force serving honorably as a jet fighter pilot during the Vietnam War. He retired as a Major after 20 years of honorable service.
Walter was predeceased by his wife Jean, his sister Olive Greenlund and his brothers William Smith, Jr. and Bradford Smith.
Mr. Smith is survived by his daughter Gina Smith of Wylie, TX, his son Walter L. Smith, Jr. of Fort Myers, FL, his sisters Donna Carlson of Westlake, LA and Mary Bahn of Daytona Beach Shores, FL, his sister-in-law Rose Smith of DeLand, FL and many nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held Friday, October 28, 2016 at 3:00 PM at The Cloisters Chapel, 400 East Howry Avenue, DeLand, FL 32724.
Inurnment will be in Fort Myers, FL at a later date.
