Winifred Joyce Gordon (Nee McCalla) was born in the parish of Kingston in Jamaica, West Indies. She was born to Maudlyn Adina Rose and Lionel McCalla. After attending high school she attended a commercial school that focused on secretarial skills such as typing and shorthand where she earned her Associates Degree. She went on to work in a photo studio managing the front office where she met and married Berris Rupert Gordon. They migrated to America. Joyce had two children Gail and Wendy who she stayed at home to raise for the next 13 years. She was a wonderful and supportive wife and mother. Joyce was an excellent homemaker; in fact she sewed many of the children’s clothes and even things in the home such as curtains, etc. She loved to cook and have everyone enjoy a good meal. She was also an excellent baker making any and everything including typical Jamaican fruit cakes and buns at the appropriate time of the year. She was always surrounded by many friends and believed strongly in family. She was not only the mother of Gail and Wendy but many other kids who were not related but loved her dearly and called her “mom” or “Aunt Joyce”. When she felt the children were old enough, Joyce began to pursue her own career. She went to work at Macy’s and became the Executive Secretary for the Vice President of Flooring in Herald Square New York. Everyone loved “Winnie” as they called her. She was professional, kind and had a most lovable personality. When Berris retired as President of the New York State Credit Union League, the couple decided to move to Florida. They came to Deltona in 1983. She was very dedicated to her faith. She was raised Anglican but later became Presbyterian in line with her husband. She was a very religious woman who followed our Lord in life and is only too happy to be with him now after death. She leaves behind her daughter Wendy, nephews Alex and Bruce, cousins, friends, and most importantly her warmth and her smile which will never be forgotten.
