Chief Petty Officer David Wayne Deck (USN-RET), born March 16, 1964, died unexpectedly March 16, 2021 as a result of a motor vehicle accident on his 57th birthday. David, the youngest of 11 children, was born in Columbus City, Indiana, to Warren Garrison Deck and Hilda Marie (Roche) Deck.
After graduating from high school in Churubusco, Indiana, he enlisted in the Navy, where he dedicated twenty-four years of his life standing watch for his country. David’s duty stations included Whidbey Island, WA; Meridian, MS; Subic Bay Freeport Zone, Philippines; San Diego, CA; Okinawa, Japan; and aboard the USS Ranger and USS Nimitz. David’s final posting was at the Mayport Naval Station, where he retired in 2007 as a Chief Storekeeper. David was a member of the Middleburg American Legion Post 250 for 15 years. After his Naval service, he earned his Bachelor of Science in Workforce Education and Development from Southern Illinois University. David returned to serve his country as a civilian Program Analyst for the Fleet Logistics Center Defense Fuel Support Point (DFSP) in Jacksonville, FL.
David and Mary Ann, his beloved wife, were married October 19, 1994 in San Diego, CA. In the span of their 27 years of marriage, they shared a loving life full of adventures of traveling the world in all the places they were stationed together, having and hosting parties with their family and life-long friends, and attending concerts and shows. Always a fan of a good deal, Dave was known to man the phone lines and call radio stations to win a ticket or two. David and Mary Ann were most fulfilled by building a family together and raising their children and watching them grow and thrive.
An avid collector of many things, David had an affinity for classic cars--particularly Volkswagens and GEO Metros. David could frequently be found in his backyard with a wrench in one hand and a cigar in the other. When he wasn’t tinkering with cars, David enjoyed riding his motorcycle, playing golf, following hockey, and spending time with family and close friends.
David will be lovingly remembered by Mary Ann and their children (Keith, Julie Ann, and Jacquelyn) and his daughters Merlita Gloudeman (Ross) and Melanie. He is also survived by siblings Ronnie (Nicki), Gloria Addis (Jerry), Rosemarie Morgan (Rusty), Kathy Leazier (Paul); two aunts – Mary Deck and Illene Deck; and numerous nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
David was preceded in death by his parents Warren G & Hilda Marie, brothers Warren D., Keith, four siblings that died in infancy and his brother-in-law, Rusty Morgan.
At the time of this writing, the true number of David’s vehicle holdings are still being determined. Anyone currently housing one of David’s undiscovered cars or motorcycles is encouraged to contact the family.
David was well loved by all. His family invites friends and family near and far to join us for a celebration of his life. Services will be held in-person and available through live-stream for people who are unable to travel. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 24, 2021 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Hardage-Giddens Rivermead, 127 Blanding Boulevard, Orange Park, FL 32073.
