Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints, Psalm 116:15. What rejoicing in heaven there must have been when God's faithful servant, Geraldine McLeod Thompson entered her heavenly home on September 21, 2025. "Gerry" loved her family, the church, and most of all, her Lord.
She was born in Dasher, Georgia on August 13, 1930, to Madison Cleon (Mutt) and Maebelle Wisenbaker McLeod. She graduated from Dasher Bible School and went on to study at Florida Christian College, Lipscomb College, and Harding College, eventually earning her degree in Elementary Education at Rollins College in Orlando. In 1953 she met and married Charles (Chuck) Thompson. They lived for 22 years in Montgomery, Alabama, where they raised their three children, Rick, Greg and Tina.
During the time the Thompson family lived in Orlando, Florida, Gerry founded The South Seminole Enrichment Center, a ministry outreach of the South Seminole Church of Christ. When kindergarten was introduced into Florida public schools, the curriculum adopted statewide, was written by Gerry when she was Director of the SSEC preschool. Over the years, she also taught school in Montgomery, Orlando and Jacksonville, Florida.
Apart from her family, Gerry was most proud of the authorship of three books. Our Dasher Roots was an accounting of the history of Dasher, Georgia, which she co-authored with Carol England McLeod. The two relied on additional contributions by other longtime local residents. J.C. Townsend, a childhood friend of Gerry, began a historical chronicle of Florida Churches of Christ. Upon his death, with the permission of his wife, Gerry completed and published his unfinished work, A History of Churches of Christ in Florida from 1869-1949, with all proceeds going to Florida Bible Camp. At the age of 90, Gerry wrote What a Family! in 2020, an in-depth study of Jesus' earthly family.
Gerry was the humble recipient of Ms. Senior Clay County 2024.
Gerry is survived by three children, Rick (Angela) Thompson, Greg (Tina) Thompson, Tina (Ivan) Garcia. She delighted in grandchildren, Derek Thompson, Kyle (Angela) Thompson, Alison (Scott Kegley) Green, Kent Thompson, Christopher (Brittney)Garcia, Sophia Garcia, and Annabel (Cameron) Martinez. She was an excellent example to great-grandchildren Dash, Caylee, Ivy, Layla, Nia, Isa, Scott, Riley, Anne, and Noel. In addition to her parents, and Chuck, her husband of over 50 years, Gerry was pre-deceased by her brothers Wallace and M.C. McLeod.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 11, 2025, at 11 a.m. at the Dasher Church of Christ, 4359 Dasher Road, Dasher, Georgia. Memorial contributions may be made to Georgia Christian School, Dasher, Georgia (4359 Dasher Road, 31601 or www.georgiachristian.org/giving).
