Joseph was born on October 3, 1935, in Peekskill, New York, to the late William and Alene Mackey. A man of deep character, strength, and kindness, Joseph lived a life defined by love, service, and generosity. To those who knew him, he was simply the greatest man—a steady presence, a giving soul, and a source of wisdom and warmth.
Joseph honorably served his country in the United States Army, a commitment that reflected his lifelong sense of duty and pride. Following his military service, he dedicated many years of hard work to his career, including his time at the VA Hospital in Montrose, New York, and later at the ConEdison Nuclear Power Plant.
A devoted family man, Joseph was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 42 years, Concetta T. Mackey, whose memory he carried with him always. He was also preceded in death by his parents; his brothers William, Timothy, Robert, and Richard Mackey; his sisters Caroline Brennan, Pearl Cuveron, and Winifred Shoemaker; and his great-grandchild, Jeremy.
Joseph’s greatest joy in life was his family. He is survived by his children: Anthony J. Mackey (Julie), Raymond E. Mackey, Penny A. Baran (Kevin), and Lisa M. Dorris (David); his brother Donald Mackey; his five cherished grandchildren, Stephanie, Kayleigh, Brandy, Kevin C., and Cole; and his seven adored great-grandchildren, Joe, Ryleigh, Ryan, Charleigh, Caleb, Beau, and Luke. His legacy of love will continue to live on through each of them.
Joseph had a passion for life’s simple pleasures. He was an avid baseball fan and a loyal New York Yankees supporter, often sharing his love of the game by taking his family to baseball games. He also enjoyed watching golf and found great peace and satisfaction in woodworking. His love of building was evident in everything he engineered. He also loved teaching his craft to everyone he met —many of his unique designs began as sketches on paper napkins. These handmade treasures remain lasting symbols of his love and ingenuity.
A man of strong Catholic faith, Joseph lived with compassion, humility, and a generous heart. He was loved by many and will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Joseph’s life was a testament to love, dedication, and quiet strength. His memory will forever be a blessing to his family and friends.
