This was taken as we were entering the another clinic about a 45 minute drive from Browning. I still remember our patients.  He had a wonderful way of talking to his patients, even the youngest of them.  I am a retired Nurse Practitioner .  I am so grateful for this experience and to have met Dr. Joe.

This photo was taken outside the clinic in Browning in July 2022.  This was his final outreach mission on the Blackfeet Reservation.

I first met Dr. Matheu in July 2022 on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation in Browning, MT.   He was a special person, so kind and caring with his patients.  I loved the experience and got to know a special person.  I was so saddened to hear of his passing.  My sincere condolences to his family.  May be rest in peace.  He made an impact on all who knew him.

I attended medical school in Chicago's Hyde Park with Joe from 1965-1969. Joe was above all, a consummate family man, one of the few who made it through med school without succumbing to the pressures and getting divorced. He loved medicine and his patients, and he took medicine seriously. It has been several years since I saw Joe as I missed our 50th-graduation anniversary in 2019. I do not want to speak for the rest of the classmates; however, I am quite certain they would all agree that Joe was a leader that many of them tried to emulate. A caring physician, a family man, and a Christian.
RIP my brother. You are now in the hands of the eternal creator.

Dr. Matheu was my Doctor for almost 50 years through 3 pregnancies and pneumonia and allergies and every other malady that I had. He was always so kind and understanding and helpful. I have missed him since he retired last June.  I cannot find another doctor that comes close to the type of care he gave. He sacrificed his own healthcare to continue helping others and I only wish he had time to enjoy his retirement and take care of himself as he put off his own issues. I want his family to know what a great person and doctor he was. I feel I have lost a good friend and sad I did not know to come to his services. He will be dearly missed.  At this brief time of sorrow of mom and Dads passing Know this brief period will be replaced with a MUCH DEEPER appreciation of the gift they gave all of us . The caring, love and guidance they shared with all  whom they encountered is the truest testament of a glorious life spent in service of others. He was the best mentor, teacher and Best of all an exemplar of what is a caring wonderful Physician.
  He taught how to have fun with his wicked sense of humor and his always curious life long learning...he simply lived and loved by being your wonderful parents.  He is my hero for many spirited reasons I call him chief. He made learning fun , he helped build confidence in all whom he mentored. He IS my favorite. I don't have the words to express my gratitude to your mom and dad...what they shared was a deep honor to know them and the desire to follow the wonderful loving example they so graciously set for all.

Joe was a gentleman who “walked the talk“ as both a physician and a leader who cared for the marginalized . 
  Role model for us all on how to live a life of love and service.

Joe was a devoted physician and leader of the Blackfeet Volunteer Medical Corps. He will be deeply missed by his patients and the Christian Brothers of the Blackfeet School in Browning Montana. Joe and Ginny were both devoted to the Blackfeet Corp. We will miss both of them
