

Alexander McPherson was the youngest of five children, born the 26th of August, 1919, in Stuart, Fl, to George and Jeanette McPherson, a founding family of the city. He attended the University of Florida and received a commission in the US Army, called to active duty in 1940. He first served as a 2nd lieutenant in the horse drawn field artillery and then, after pilot training at Corsicana, TX, he entered the US Army Air Corp. He married Betty Quigley in 1942 and had a son in 1944. After ferrying fighter planes for two years he served in the China-India-Burma campaign, completing 86 missions "over the hump" between Karachi, India and Kunming, China. For his service he was awarded the distinguished flying cross and the air medal, as well as numerous other medals for valor. He subsequently served in the US Air Force in Japan, Korea and Greenland, retiring in 1964 at McCoy Air Force Base. He spent 20 years as a mathematics teacher at Stonewall Jackson Middle School and private Christian Schools. He passed away on February 24th and is survived by his wife of 70 years, son, three grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
