9/30/34 to 3/10/11
Carmen was born on September 30, 1934 in small town in Puerto Rico called Puerta de Tierra. She is the eldest of 6 children born to Miguel and Carmen Alonso. Carmen was a very protective sister to her siblings Elsa, Mike, Emma, Norma and Irma. Her loving and kind heart was evident for as long as anyone can remember. Carmen came to New York at age 12 and throughout the years learned the English language better than some born here. She always put her heart and soul into everything she did including her job. She was a dental assistant, friendly school lunch server, food nutritionist, and finally retired from her favorite job of all as a Court Interpreter in Brooklyn, New York. Carmen married Ruben Sanchez in August 29, 1959 and she was the proudest mother of three children; Suzanne, Michelle and Steven. No one can hold a candle to how much love and attention she gave to her children. She was always there for them no matter what. Everyone knew that if you needed someone to talk to Carmen was more than willing to listen and offer advice with the best intentions possible. She was always giving to others without expecting anything in return.
"Nana” or “Mina” – this is what she was endearingly called by her grandchildren; Mark, Nikolas, Julian, Jarryd and Danny. They will tell you that she was the best grandma in the world; very nurturing, loving, funny, and she gave the best hugs and kisses ever..... Carmen has many nieces and nephews and no greater Aunt could she have been. In their eyes “she was Tops, Tops, Tops.”She has many friends (more than you can have in a life time) from Puerto Rico to the New York and finally Florida. All who were blessed to know Carmen can truly feel her sincere and caring ways. She lived life with so much love in her heart and always saw the good in everyone. She is truly a person that we should all emulate in our life; and in doing that we will honor her memory for ever and ever.“Mom, Sister, Grandma, Auntie, Friend” – we miss you, but we know that you will always be in our hearts forever.
