Catherine “Addie” Priess, 93, passed away at home and was lovingly surrounded by her family. She received excellent care from Broad Reach Hospice in her final months and days. She was born and raised in Guttenberg, New Jersey and was the daughter of William and Anna Ragati. She is predeceased by her parents and her brother, William Ragati.
Addie graduated from Academy of Holy Angels High School in Demarest, New Jersey.
She worked at Western Electric as a comptometer operator where she found a very dear friend in Edith Facompre. The families remained close throughout her life.
Addie found the love of her life in her family friend, August Priess. They were married for 48 wonderful years. She is predeceased by August “Gus” Priess, who died on July 21, 2000.
Addie and Gus settled in an apartment in Clifton, NJ, and thereafter moved to Ramsey where they started their family. They had three girls and Addie enjoyed being involved in all of their activities including becoming a Girl Scout leader. She became very involved in her church, St. Paul Roman Catholic Church in Ramsey. Addie was very active in the Rosary Altar Society, and served as President for one year. She later worked as the church secretary. She began a consignment business with her dear friend, Joan McEvoy (Wehrell) and thoroughly enjoyed the time they spent together at “Second Time Around”. Addie treasured her time working with Cathy Alekna at Kid ‘n Kaboodle for many years. Addie’s hobbies included quilting, working on jigsaw puzzles, and reading.
Addie and Gus lived in Ramsey from 1954 until they moved to Eastham, Massachusetts in 1981. They became very involved in the Church of the Visitation. Her family is very proud that Addie started the “Giving Tree” at Christmas time to help needy families which became a tradition then carried over to St. Joan of Arc Church. Addie was a very active member of the Women’s Guild and volunteered many hours at the thrift shop. She was a devout Catholic and prayed the rosary daily.
She is survived by her daughters, Joanne Galloway (Jim), Kathryn Rothstein (Stan), and Susan Holman (Harry). She is also survived by six grandchildren, Dana (Chris), Katie (Bryan), Spencer, Megan (TJ), James, and Jeffrey. She was a great grandmother to Brynn, Amelia, and Landon and had many beloved nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held at Nickerson’s Funeral Home, 77 Eldridge Park Way, Orleans, MA on Sunday, December 10th from 1-4 pm. A funeral mass will be held on Monday morning, December 11th at 11 am at St. Joan of Arc Church in Orleans followed by a private burial at 1:30pm at Massachusetts National Cemetery in Buzzards Bay, MA.
