Born in Providence, Rhode Island, he was the only child of Madeline Titus Ashby and Charles A. Ashby Jr. His family moved to Garden City, New York, when he was 10 years old. He graduated from Garden City High School, went on to the University of North Carolina and then to Georgia Institute of Technology, where he received his engineering degree. He married his wife, Elfriede ("Freddi"), in 1961. He worked for AT&T in Manhattan and earned an MBA in Finance at New York University. Upon graduation, he was recruited by IBM and enjoyed a long, rewarding international career in finance. After retirement, he and Freddi moved to Orleans on Cape Cod, where they have lived for 25 years. He served on the finance committee for the Town of Orleans for three years. He also served as treasurer for the Orleans United Methodist Church and for the Mayflower Point Homeowners Association for many years. He was a member of the Orleans Yacht Club, where he particularly enjoyed Sunday afternoon sailing races.
Charlie is survived by Elfriede, his wife of sixty years, and by their four children, Elizabeth Davidson, Christopher Ashby, Andrew Ashby, and Jennifer Harris, as well as nine grandchildren whom he dearly cherished.
A celebration of Charlie's life will be held on Saturday, December 11, 2021 at two o'clock at the Orleans United Methodist Church, 73 Main Street, Orleans MA 02653.
