

HARWICHPORT – Mrs. Dorothy T (Turnbull) Atkins, 108, of Harwichport, MA died on Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2015 in Chatham, MA. She was predeceased by her husband, William C. Atkins, Sr, her siblings and a nephew.
Dorothy was born and raised in Paterson, NJ. After graduation from high school, she began her career at Western Electric in NYC, followed by positions on the NJ State Inheritance Tax Bureau and the staff of Senator Harrison Williams, Sr.
Dorothy was a member of Jeptha Chapter O.E. S. for 87 years and Grace United Methodist Church in Wyckoff, NJ for over 50 years. She was awarded the Boston Post Cane in June of 2014 for being the oldest resident of Harwich, MA.
At the age of 95, she moved from NJ to Harwichport, MA secured a 30 year mortgage and lived independently until September of 2014. She was an ardent walker, liked the beaches and music programs that the Cape offers.
Dorothy is survived by her son, William C. Atkins, Jr and his wife Jean of Ringwood, NJ; her daughter, Dorothy (Atkins) Stenner and her husband John of Orleans, MA; 3 nieces, Barbara Clark of GA, Alice Pierce of SC and Marilyn Smith of NY; 2 grandsons, Douglas and William D. Atkins of OH and CO respectively; 3 granddaughters, Sandra (Stenner) Dinicola, Melissa (Stenner) Willens and Allison (Stenner) Stoudt of NJ, MD and PA respectively; and 11 great grandchildren, Autumn, Booker, Carter and Decker Atkins (OH), Kaya and Wyatt Atkins (CO), Emma and Matteo Dinicola (NJ), Mackenzie Stoudt (PA), and Colin and Kaitlin Willens (MD).
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 31st at 11am at the Northside United Methodist church, Brewster, MA. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Dorothy’s name may be made to the Northside UMC, Careabouts, Perkins Talking Books for the Blind, The Low Vision program at the Brooks library in Harwich or a charity of ones choice.
