Jean was born in Worcester, daughter of Eugene F. and Ann Rita (Brown) Spellman, and was raised in Shrewsbury. She graduated from Notre Dame Academy in Worcester, MA, where she was president of the class of 1965. She trained at St. Vincent Hospital Nursing School and was licensed as a Registered Nurse in 1967. In 1969, she began working as an emergency-room nurse at St. Vincent Hospital, where she remained until becoming an administrator at Thornton’s Nursing Home in Northboro, a position she held for more than 20 years. She met her husband Pete at a Parents Without Partners meeting which led to their marriage several years later in 1981. This marked the beginning of an amazing and successful life together with their newly expanded family.
She was a member of St. Rose of Lima Church in Northboro for many years. After moving to Eastham, she attended St. Joan of Arc Church, where she managed the church thrift shop, a role in which she took great pride while ensuring its successful operation. She was also a member of the Women’s Guild and served as an officer for many years.
Jean courageously endured a battle with MS over five decades. Despite this, Jean was known for her great sense of humor, smile, and warmth.
She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, quilting, and painting with watercolors and pastels, a pursuit in which she displayed a natural talent. Jean and Pete built a home in Eastham later in life, fulfilling their dream of retiring to Cape Cod. Over the last 30 years, their home has been busy with the comings and goings of friends, neighbors, relatives, and especially grandchildren, who often enjoyed overnight visits complete with doughnuts for breakfast. Together, Jean and Pete enjoyed all that the Cape has to offer, including cruises in Town Cove on Pete’s boat, picnics on the beach at Race Point, and dinners with friends as part of the Nauset Newcomers and the Orleans Yacht Club.
Jean was loved by all, especially her very close and wonderful family.
Calling hours will be held Friday, March 20 from 10-11am at St. Joan of Arc Church in Orleans, followed by a Mass at 11am. A private burial will be held the following day at Evergreen Cemetery in Eastham. Memorial contributions may be made to the National MS Society, P.O. Box 91891, Washington, D.C. 20090-1891, or to the Visiting Nurse Association of Cape Cod (https://support.givetocapecodhealth.org/donate) whose loving care over the last three years allowed Jean to remain in her home.
