Born in 1929, Joyce started carving in wood as early as 10 years old. She grew up in Concord, developing a passion for literature and writing in the historic town. At age 26, she traveled to Madrid, Spain, where she studied sculptor with one of that country’s most respected sculptors, Don Ramon Mateu. Upon returning to the States, she was accepted at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, from which she graduated with honors in 1962 and completed a graduate teaching fellowship there the following year.
Joyce is survived by her sister, Barbara Melcher of South Orleans, MA, five nieces and nephews; as well as many close friends and admirers. We will be missed by all who knew her and enjoyed her art.
Memorial donations may be made to the Joyce Johnson Art/Studio Trust Fund, c/o Barbara Melcher, P.O. Box 185, South Orleans, MA 02662. The fund will support artists, writers, and the preservation of Joyce’s body of work.
A celebration of life is being planned for later this year on Cape Cod.
