

Lance was a graduate of Newton North High School and Sylvania Technical School, where he attained certification in computer electronics. He attended the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and Boston, where he studied physics.
Lance served in the U.S. Army from December 5, 1975 through December 1, 1978. He attained the rank of sergeant, and was discharged honorably. He worked as a calibration expert at Raytheon, Tyco, and Cobham.
Lance is survived by his mother, Barbara Carleen of Worcester; his three brothers and their wives: Eric Carleen and Georgia Kollia of West Windsor, NJ, Jon and Patricia Carleen of Chepachet, RI, Hans and Renée Carleen of Hubbardston, MA; seven nieces and nephews (who adored him); and three great nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, Warren Carleen.
He is remembered for his strong love of nature, long walks on snowshoes through the woods, and kayaking down the Merrimack after a hurricane. He was passionate about opera, Dickinson and Melville and Thoreau, Hogwarts and Disney, audio books, and his family.
His family remembers his love, his playful intelligence, his care and concern for others.
The memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, March 28 at the Nickerson Funeral Home in Orleans, MA. Burial of Lance’s ashes will follow immediately afterward at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Brewster.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to The New England Wild Flower Society. The Society asks that contributions by mail be accompanied by their donation form, which you can download from their website. Lance loved visiting their Garden in the Woods.
