Linda Plummer Van Nest, 80, passed away on 9/9/2021 after a brief illness. Linda was born in Rockville, CT to Frederick and Eleanor Plummer. She graduated from Andover High School and Fischer College in Boston. After marrying her high school sweetheart, John E. Van Nest, she embarked on a life as an Army spouse. Managing the home front, both during wartime and peace, and raising two boys as they traveled through the US and the world. She taught her boys to embrace wherever the family landed. She always held a special place in her heart for North Carolina, Japan, Germany and Korea. While living on Fort Belvoir, VA, she enjoyed working and managing the base Bowling Alley, which allowed her to interact with soldiers and families on the base while continuing to support others. As Linda and her husband planned their post-military life, Eastham became their permanent home for the last 27 years. She enjoyed volunteering for the Orleans Cardinals (now Fire Birds) for ten years. She loved to get the fan gear ready each spring but most of all loved being part of the community and watching the players and fans enjoy summertime baseball. She worked for the Orleans Chamber of Commerce and happily staffed the visitor’s booth in the summer, helping tourists find their own favorite special spots on the Cape. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, COL John Van Nest, USA Ret. Her sons, John, of North Carolina, and Michael of Massachusetts. In addition to six grandchildren, ranging in age from 8-22. Her sister-in-law, Beth Lungwitz of Illinois, niece Jennifer Werner and her family of four in Kansas. Not to be overlooked is her faithful dog, Brandy, who will miss hiding from small humans by her feet under the table. She will be dearly missed by friends and family alike. A memorial visitation will be held on Saturday, September 18th from 12:00 to 2:00 PM at Nickerson Funeral Home, 77 Eldredge Park Way, Orleans, MA. A Celebration of Life will begin at 1:30pm in the funeral home. At a later date there will be a private family event to lay her to rest. Due to COVID-19 we will not be conducting a reception at the end of the ceremony. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory may be made to the Dana-Farber and the Jimmy Fund ( “…and just at the moment when someone at my side says: “there, she is gone!” here are other eyes watching her coming, and other voices ready to take up the glad shout: “hear she comes!” -Henry Van Dyke

Dear Jack; We were deeply saddened to learn about the passing of your lovely wife, Linda. She was a very special lady and her loss leaves a large hole in all of our lives.

I would like to get together with you for lunch, sometime to catch up, when your life settles down. I also still have a set of keys for your house.
