Robert “Rob” Bloomer of Brewster passed away peacefully at his home on July 21st, surrounded by his family. He was 66 years old. The son of the late Walter and Betsey Bloomer, he was born in Providence, RI on May 26, 1956. He was raised in Chatham, graduating from Chatham High School in 1974, then went on to earn a business degree from North Adams State College in 1978 while working as a ski instructor at Berkshire East.
He then put his business knowledge to good use, founding Ocean Edge Landscaping in Orleans which he operated for 38 years.
Rob literally stumbled upon his future wife, Mary Kate Davitt at the finish line of the Boston Marathon in 1984. It was clear from the start they had something very special brewing. They were married on July 26, 1986 in Cotuit, ultimately settling in Brewster to raise their family.
He loved fishing and spent many days and nights at the family camp on North Beach, frequently commuting to work from the beach. He would take his trumpet with him, practicing for the Brewster Town Band with which he participated for many years. When work slowed down off season, he was able to enjoy time in Naples, Florida as well as being able to indulge his love of skiing and hunting, with yearly trips to Upstate New York to sit in the woods with his "dear" friends. But what he loved most was showing his devotion to his family, friends, customers and employees. Whether pitching in to help construct the Brewster Drummer Boy playground, or taking the lead on an extracurricular landscaping project, he was always present, ready to lend a hand and steady; earning the nickname ‘the diesel’ from his extended family. He will be sorely missed.
Rob is survived by his wife, Mary Kate, and their children Maggie, Alex, Irene and her husband Matthew. He is also survived by his siblings, Kathy, Jim and Cynthia, as well as Adine, his Swedish AFS sister.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, August 5th from 5:00-8:00 at Nickerson Funeral Home, 77 Eldredge Park Way, Orleans, MA. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 6th at 11:AM at the First United Methodist Church on Cross Street in Chatham. A reception will follow at the families property in Brewster. Burial will be private.
