
Walter Howard Mayo, III, of Orleans and Boston, passed away peacefully on Sunday October 18, 2015. He was 77 years of age. A life long resident of Orleans, he was the son of the late Walter Howard Mayo Jr. and Barbara Dean Mayo.
An honors graduate of Trinity College, Hartford, Connecticut, he earned his LLB, cum laude, in 1962 from Yale Law School. He began his legal career at the Federal Maritime Commission in Washington DC. He was assigned to the office of the Solicitor where he supervised the Commission’s appellate litigation in U.S. Court of Appeals and in the Supreme Court of the United States. In 1967, he returned to Massachusetts to serve as an assistant Attorney General of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts under then Attorney General of Massachusetts Elliott Richardson. In 1975 he joined the law firm of Chaplin, Barzun and Casner, becoming a partner in 1976. He served as managing partner of Casner & Edwards from 1983 to 2009. At the time of his death, he was of Counsel to the firm.
Active in the community over the years, he served on many boards including the Massachusetts Society of Mayflower Descendants, being a direct decedent of Nathaniel Mayo who arrived in Barnstable County in 1644. He served on the Board of Governors of the Handel & Haydn Society. He was the first Presiding Judge of the Ecclesiastical Trial Court of the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts.
He is survived by his siblings and their spouses: John Randall Mayo, Robert Pierson Mayo and Nadine Mayo, Kenneth Newcomb Mayo and Donna Mayo and Barbara Mayo Llewellyn.
Nieces: Virginia Mayo, Elizabeth Mayo, Lisa Mayo Pinardi, Nephews: John R. Mayo Jr., Joseph H. Mayo, Steven Mayo, Douglas Mayo, Taylor M. Llewellyn, Blair R. Llewellyn, Godchildren: Susannah Hill, Susannah Richardson, Taylor Llewellyn and Blair Llewellyn and countless good friends.
Funeral Services will be held at Trinity Church, Copley Square, Boston, MA on November 12, 2015 at 10:00 AM.
A service will be held at St. James the Fisherman in Wellfleet, MA in the Summer of 2016.
