Betty, a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away peacefully on November 14, 2025, at the age of 95 at the Ormond Beach Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Ormond Beach, Florida. She lived most of her adult years in Columbus, Ohio and Millersport, Ohio. She moved to Ormond Beach to be close to her girls and their families in 2019.
Betty was born in Williamsport, Ohio, on January 10, 1930 to Thomas A. and Mabel (Wolfe) Cleland. As the youngest of nine children, her family moved to Racine, Ohio, where Betty was raised.
She married in 1948 to a handsome sailor, Paul E. McMurray. They were married for 66 years before his passing in 2015. In 1950, they moved to Columbus, Ohio, where Paul started a business, McMurray’s Tire Service, at the corner of Woodbury and Sullivant.
As a housewife, Betty doted on her family. She made her family feel comfortable and safe. She was an excellent cook, loved her flowers, and helped Paul with the service station business. She was involved in her children’s schooling by participating in the PTA and becoming a room mother. In addition, Betty was an active member in her community by volunteering at Mount Carmel Hospital. She loved playing Euchre games with friends in Millersport and Buckeye Lake, Ohio.
She is survived by her three daughters: Beverlee McMurray, Cathy Melahn (Scott), Paula McMurray- Schwarz (Thomas). Two grandchildren: Colleen O’Neill and Jake Schwarz. Many close nieces and nephews. Two wonderful sister-in-laws: Betty Guinn and Jane Cleland, and her close buddies at Ormond Beach Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, Mark and Marcella.
Betty is preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her sister, her brothers, and her great grandchild, Cash Harmon.
Betty will be remembered for her kindness to others, her big smile (and occasional wink), and dedication to her family members.
