Hugh was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to the late Thomas and Maude Watkins. Hugh moved to Miami in 1954 with his family. He attended St. Mary’s grade school and graduated from Archbishop Curley High School; where he starred as an outstanding running back, number “23”.
Upon graduating, he joined Bell South, where he worked for 38 years until he retired in the Flagler area, where he built his dream home on the water with his wife Gail. In 2013, he moved to Sebastian to join his siblings in their retirement years. Hugh was preceded in death by his loving wife, Gail of 24 years who passed away in October of 2008.
Hugh is survived by his daughter, Julie Watkins (Tom) New Smyrna Beach; his sons Hugh Jr. New Smyrna Beach, Michael (Gail) Palm Coast, Sean Daytona Beach, step-daughter Amy (John), and four grandchildren who he loved dearly.
Hugh was an avid sports fan that enjoyed traveling, cheering for the Dolphins, and even recently added sky diving to his list of favorite hobbies. He also enjoyed spending his spare time riding his bike, hiking, and gardening. He was also a master at Tuesday night trivia at Woody’s BBQ.
A funeral service will be held at 11am Saturday, September 9th, 2017 at Volusia Memorial Funeral Home, 548 N. Nova Rd, Ormond Beach FL.
