John’s life was marked by service, and a deep commitment to those around him. In March 1958, months prior to his graduation from Somerville High School, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, where he served with pride. Following his honorable discharge, John remained actively involved with the Marine Corps League through the John Basilone Detachment. His enduring connection to his fellow Marines was evident in his regular participation in the annual parade in Raritan, New Jersey—a tradition that reflected both his patriotism and sense of camaraderie. His presence is even captured in the bonus features of the HBO series *The Pacific*, a testament to his lasting ties to military history. He was also active in the Toys for Tots annual toy drive through the Marine Corps League.
Professionally, John built a successful career as a computer programmer and systems analyst during an era of rapid technological advancement. He began his programming career at Somerset Trust Company and went on to contribute his expertise to several prominent organizations including American Cyanamid, Johnson & Johnson, Worthington Pump, Warner Cosmetics, Sony, and Vital Computer Resources. His work spanned decades of innovation and transformation in the tech industry.
Beyond his professional accomplishments and military service, John was known for his generosity and loyalty. He was always ready to lend a hand—whether it was offering mechanical assistance or simply being there for someone in need. Those who knew him appreciated not only his technical skills but also his warmth and compassion.
John cherished his family deeply. He is survived by his daughter Patricia Centofanti of Somerville, NJ; his sister Janet Carpenter and her husband George Carpenter of Tucson, Arizona; Barbara Davis, his loving partner and her daughters Cheryl and Carolie, of Ormond Beach, Florida; and his beloved nephews, nieces, and cousins. Their lives were enriched by John's kindness, childlike mischievous humor and loyalty.
He was preceded in death by his father John Centofanti; mother Jessie Castelli (Steele); brother Jerry Centofanti; and sister-in-law Lorna Centofanti; and beloved aunts and uncles.
John’s legacy is one of service and of quiet strength. May his memory continue to inspire acts of kindness and dedication.
