LaVerne M. John, age 95, passed away on September 9, 2025, surrounded by family. Known to many as Vern, he was a man of integrity, quiet strength, and deep loyalty — a devoted husband, proud father and grandfather, and a steadfast friend.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Max and Elda John; his sister, Betty Vaile; his daughter, Debra Kittenbacker; and his stepson, Steven Pettenger.
Vern is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Dolores John; daughter, Lauri John; stepdaughter, Gay Pettenger; stepson, James Pettenger; grandsons, Bradley Pettenger, Josh Tucker, Mitch Tucker; and granddaughters, Brandi Pettenger; Kaley Pettenger and a host of family and friends.
Born with a strong sense of purpose, Vern began learning carpentry from his father at a young age. By high school, he had already taken over the family’s building contractor business, earning respect through hard work and skill. He later served his country with honor in the U.S. military, stationed in Germany.
Vern was a man who valued both work and adventure. In his younger years, he enjoyed racing go-karts. In retirement, he found joy in golfing, RVing, and seeing the world alongside Dolores. Together, they visited all 50 states—traveling by road, staying in timeshares, or camping under the stars. They cruised the Caribbean, explored Canada, and made a lifetime of memories.
He had a deep love for square dancing, not just as a hobby, but as a way to connect, move, and celebrate life with his beloved Dolores. Together, they were longtime members of the Dixie Squares, where Vern served as Club President. He also served as Vice President of the local RV club, reflecting his leadership. Vern never sought the spotlight, but he led with quiet confidence and commitment. His greatest joy came from time spent with his family—especially traveling with his grandchildren, creating memories they will carry forward.
Vern and Dolores marked their 50th wedding anniversary in 2018, a milestone that reflected a life built on devotion, partnership, and shared adventures.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, September 24, at 2:00 p.m., with visitation beginning at 1:00 p.m. Family and friends are warmly invited to honor a life well lived.
Vern will be remembered for his steady presence, his unwavering love for his family, and a life lived with purpose and grace.
