

Born in San Germán, Santiago de Cuba Province, Mavis lived a life marked by resilience, faith, and love. After earning a Bachelor of Science in Cuba, she immigrated to the U.S., where she restarted her education—earning her GED and later graduating from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City.
Fluent in Spanish, Creole, and English, Mavis was a devoted educator who empowered immigrant children to thrive through language. She was also a loving Wife, Mother, Tía, Méme, Abuela, and Friend—known for her faith, warmth, hospitality, and timeless sense of style.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfredo Smith, and sisters Iris, Mildred, and Graciela (“Chela”). She is survived by her children Alfred, Myrna, and Maritza; daughter-in-law Dianne; six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.
Mavis leaves behind a legacy of strength, service, and love. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
Friends and family will gather for a visitation on Tuesday, July 29, beginning at 10:00 am at Volusia Memorial Funeral Home - Ormond Beach, 548 N. Nova Road. A formal Celebration of Life will begin at 11:00 am, with burial to follow at Volusia Memorial Park, Ormond Beach.
