Sirvart "Syl" Bedrosian, also known as Syl and Sylva, died peacefully at Grand Villa, Ormond Beach, on May 4 after a battle with dementia. Syl was days short of her 92nd birthday. The immigrant daughter of Armenian parents who fled to Iran during Turkey’s genocide, grew up in Great Neck, New York. Syl earned a Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Rhode Island, and was a Food Scientist for Lipton where she formulated “Cup o’ Soup” projects and was active with the Institute of Food Technologists…and a very successful matchmaker. Sirvart was predeceased by Hmayak, her husband of 27 years in 1983.
After working and raising her family in Northern New Jersey, Syl resettled in Ormond Beach in 1999 to be near her mother. Syl put passion and good humor into all her pursuits: tennis, Bridge, Toastmasters. She was a Master Gardener and member of New Horizons and MOAS. The Armenian Presbyterian Church of Paramus, New Jersey, and Ormond’s St James Episcopal Church were Sirvart’s spiritual homes. Syl was a loving and generous friend to all. Syl also authored four books:” Armenian Heritage Recipes”,”The Complete Bulgur Cookbook”, “Caring for and Feeding your Dog Naturally”, and “The World’s Healthiest Diet” pioneering what was later to be called the Mediterranean diet".
Syl is survived by her son Gregg of Ormond Beach, his children Mathew, Melanie and Mason, and son Gary with partner Alexandra of Huntsville, Alabama, and his children Michael, Patricia, and Steven, and Syl’s sister Linda Kalaydjian of Ormond Beach.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 10, at 11 am at St James Episcopal Church of Ormond Beach. In lieu of flowers please donate to St James Episcopal Church.
