To all the Murphy clan especially Thelma (my second Mom), Susan and I are so sorry for your loss. Brian never ceased to amaze us with his humour and ability to find pleasure in simple things like a Tim Hortons coffee and watching a bad action movie. I got to spend some good quality time with Brian over the last three years while in Ontario, and my favourite time with him was watching a hockey game with his beloved Habs.
I know he is finally free from all the pain and constraints that he had endured over these many years.
I miss him and will always remember how important he was in my life. His spirit lives on in all of us who loved him.

I was just informed by my brother, a retired police officer, that Brian has passed.  Although it has been decades since we had time together, my childhood memories remain.  Brian was my best friend up until the age of 12, not only because he had access to Superman, Ironman and other great after school shows, but due to our mutual love of sports and just plain kid fun.  I guess I also liked to be teased by his sisters given that teasing by my three brothers usually involved pain whilst at the Murphy household, it was more pleasant.

I imagine it has been tough for Brian over these past many years after the accident despite the loving support he has had from his family and friends. In spirit, he is complete now ... able to dance, to laugh and to remember the joyful times he had on this earth.  Rest in piece my long lost friend.

In the last few years, I've lost my sister Lyn, my brother and best friend Tippy, and now my best friend and brother Murph. We go back almost as far as my siblings. We met and became friends at St. Monica's in second grade. I have lots of memories of those early years like Saturday mornings at my house. I'd get up early, my parents still sleeping, unlock the front door so Murph could let himself in and we'd sit till noon, watching Johnny Quest, etc. eating sausages and eggs.I remember sleepovers at Murphy's house - staying up all night, telling stories, laughing and driving Mrs. Murph crazy.  I remember Friday nights when Mrs. Murphy brought the 'order' home. Bags and boxes of groceries and goodies.  Then there was Sunday roast beef dinner night where I felt like a true member of the Murphy clan, sitting around their kitchen table with my best friend and 'brother' Brian and all my adopted siblings. I got him into hockey and as his skating skills were rather shaky, the coaches put him in 'nets'. He took to playing goalie immediately. It was while playing for Terrebonne Park in hockey and football that we really bonded. We were classmates, teammates and best friends. I knew he had my back if I coughed up the puck, and we improved our skills playing one-on-one for hours at the park.  He was my quarterback when I played receiver in football and all the while we were competing with each other for bragging rights which were usually his. Whenever we did go head-to-head with each other (in pool, racquetball, just about anything) I really wanted to beat him, but seldom did. But when I did, I got so little reaction from Brian, the 'thrill of victory' wasn't so thrilling. I've always been competitive since then, and still am. And to me that's a good thing. It keeps me motivated to stay healthy and enjoy life, and I owe that to Murph. I always refer to that part of my life as 'the best', and it's a fact that almost every memory of that time, Brian is a part of. Getting in trouble at St. Monica's, football and hockey games, Terrebonne Park, Uncle Ben and Uncle Willie, and Cy Paar. When we hit our teens there were the girls (Murph always did well in that department) i.e. Lilly. There were motorcycles, he had a Triumph, I had a Suzuki. Ok, his was cooler, but mine was faster. Then off to Toronto with me trailing where he became a cop. Saturdays were often a full afternoon at the Cop Club playing snooker and having a few beers.  Well - probably more than a few. We both got married around a year apart from each other, and I was his best man.  We had our first kids five months apart, so we experienced first time fatherhood together (I told you we were competitive!). I don't want to dwell on the next part of Brian's life, the accident and all the years that followed in different hospitals and rehab houses. Suffice to say that every visit was followed by a few tears, but we always managed to have a few laughs due to his uncanny memory of the best times of our lives. I know my friend is in a better place now and is finally free from all that's held him back these last thirty years or so.  I'll miss you and I love you, and thanks for being such an important part of my life.  Your Best Friend, Steve Cox.

I had the privilige of working with Brian as a young officer in 52 Division till the time of his accident. He was an excellent officer and a credit to the Toronto Police. He could always be counted on to be there for his fellow officers. Although we only had a short time together Brian had an impact on my life and career. All the memories of our youth have come flooding back to me. It feels like it was only last week that we were all playing football in the alley behind our houses.
