May 6, 1932 – April 19, 2026
It is with broken hearts we announce the passing of Charles Edward Cyr, Jr. on April 19, 2026. Charlie passed away peacefully, surrounded by his wife and family just 2 weeks shy of his 94th birthday.
Beloved husband for more than 73 years of Beryl. Loving father to Kim Ebert (Allan), Leanne Cyr (Pete) and Jeff Cyr (Dawn). Cherished Grampa/Papa to grandchildren Kevin (Erin), Cheryl, Tyler (Trina), Blake, Devin (Debbie), Samantha (Jason), Adam (Shano), Michael (Janaye), Brett (Gabby), Paul (Devon) and great-grandchildren Tim, Elliot & Cayleigh; Logan & Sienna; Louisa, Vera & Georgia; and Jase, Kya & Davis. He now joins his dear sons Cam and infant Laurie, and grandsons Ryan and Tristan.
Predeceased by his parents Mae & Charlie Cyr, and siblings Helen Want, Ken and Keith Cyr. Survived by his youngest sister Nina Heggart. He will be remembered warmly by many nieces and nephews.
Charlie was born in 1932 and remained a westerner at heart. He met his true love, Beryl, as a teen and they married in 1952. Their love and commitment to each other have been a constant in their home and a blessing to their family. Together they built an amazing life and legacy that will touch generations of their family.
Although always a man committed to family both immediate and extended, Charlie was not afraid to leave the comfort of his roots when he accepted work roles outside of Manitoba, first in Edmonton in 1955. Four children followed rapidly in just over five years. Then in 1963, he, Beryl and the kids ventured to Whitby, Ontario where he was part of the team that built LASCO (Lake Ontario Steel Company). With just a grade 10 education, Charlie was mentored into an internationally recognized roll designer in the mini-mill steel industry. He took great pride in establishing Roll Design as a recognized profession under NAFTA and in receiving the first certification in that field.
Beryl and Charlie again relocated, this time to Oregon, enjoying a few empty-nester years before returning to Whitby upon retirement. Here they were never far from where grandchildren were the busiest, most typically a ball diamond, no matter the length of the drive.
Charlie was a gregarious individual, enjoying the company of he and Beryl’s many close friends (their “chosen family” when extended family is far). They retained those friendships, some more than seven decades. They have been faithful members of All Saints’ Anglican Church for over 62 years. Charlie was also a long-time member of Kiwanis, including a stint as President.
Charlie was also a skilled homebuilder beginning with a winterized cottage in Alberta that he built from the ground up with the help of his friends, to designing and contracting ones in Edmonton and Whitby.
Most importantly, Charlie was an affectionate man, one who gave everyone a huge hug when he greeted them. He was a man who believed in displaying his full range of emotions—unusual for men of his generation—and encouraged that authenticity in all his children and grandchildren. He treated everyone as equals, caring for all regardless of race, religion or orientation, and taught his family the same. He lived with a zest for life, and a positive belief in his fellow man. He will be missed tremendously by family and friends.
The family would like to thank all the staff of Fairview Lodge for the wonderful care provided, but particularly wish to recognize recreational therapist, Jacqueline Kehoe. She so graciously went above and beyond not just for Charlie, but for Beryl as well, and for enabling numerous videochats with distant family. You have been an angel here on earth. The family would also like to thank Beryl’s dear friends Edrie and June, who have provided support in so many ways. Charlie would be happy to know that his cherished wife, Beryl, is left in such loving care.
A funeral service will be held at All Saints’ Anglican Church, 300 Dundas St. W., Whitby on Saturday, May 16 at 11:00 am. The family will greet friends following the service. (Please contact the family for the link to a live broadcast.)
Memorial donations may be made to: All Saints’ Anglican Church or to the charity of your choice.
