On Saturday, with great sadness, we said good-bye to our loving and loyal friend, brother, uncle, and cousin, Doug Smith. Doug was born at home in Uxbridge, Ontario to Murray and Viona Smith. He loved to tell tales of his childhood spent outdoors in the Kawarthas with his three much loved siblings, Bettyann, Donna, and Keith. Doug was a proud company man who spent 32 years working for Bell Canada. His career took him to Windsor, to Happy Valley-Goose Bay, where he spent two memorable years working on the DEW line, and to downtown Toronto, where he worked in management for many years. It is not surprising that Doug volunteered to move north for his job – he had a lifelong love of adventure, travelling all over the world with his best friend and companion, Jo-anne. When Doug retired, he threw himself into a number of new pursuits, including joining the Pine Ridge Railroaders where he met many good friends with whom he spent many wonderful hours talking about his plans for the beautiful buildings and train lay-outs that he created. Doug was a quiet man who will be remembered for his kindness and seemingly endless supply of patience. He will be missed greatly by his brother Keith Smith (Debby), his nieces and nephews, Lee Horner, Kilvington Horner, Jaimin McKee (Cristin), Shannon Smith (Ian), his best friend, Jo-anne Tourangeau, her daughter, Robbin, and their extended family. We all know that wherever Doug is he will be lending a helping hand to someone, scouting new places for lunch, and running his model trains. Visitation will be held at the OSHAWA FUNERAL HOME, 847 King Street West (905-721-1234) on Thursday, January 14th from 7-9 pm and on Friday, January 15th from noon to 1pm. The funeral service will be held in the Chapel on Friday, January 15th at 1pm. If desired, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Myeloma Canada would be appreciated.
