Elizabeth Jane Birch
11 febrero , 1929 – 25 mayo , 2018
BIRCH, Elizabeth “Libby” Henrietta Jane (1929 – 2018) Libby Birch died peacefully and with great resolve on Friday, May 25th, 2018, at the age of 89 in Oshawa, Ontario. She was surrounded with love as her children said goodbye and her spirit was released to the universe and beyond. Libby was born in Belfast Ireland and grew up to be a fiercely independent woman, leaving Northern Ireland to marry Winston Douglas Birch, a Canadian WW II pilot, at the age of 19. She came at life with spirited action in all pursuits. She was a curious intellectual and went on to achieve two Bachelor’s Degrees and a Master’s Degree from Trent University later in life. At the age of 82, she was recognized as the oldest graduate on record at Trent. Libby also worked in daycare for Durham Region for 20 years. She was intensely social and grew a cherished group of friends around activities such as writing classes, bridge, theater and travel. She was a colorful, smart, funny woman and never cynical, not for a moment. She is survived by her children Lois, Robert, Michael, Elizabeth and Jo-Ann; and by her sister Anita Dunlop. Visitation will be held at OSHAWA FUNERAL HOME, 847 King Street West (905-721-1234) on Friday, June 8th from 4:00 pm until time of Celebration of Life at 5:00 pm. Memorial donations may be made in honor of her Grandson, Stephen Michael Birch to Association for Community Living, Durham North.

I grew up in the townhouse directly across from Libby and Winston. I have a lot of fond memories of them! Today something made me think of Libby and I was curious if she still lived in that same house. Libby gave me my first job! I would weed her garden and cut her grass for a few dollars. I fondly remember frequently knocking on her door to see if she had any work for me that week. She always made up a job for me and knew I loved working for a bit of spending money. She was always so kind to bring me water, show me her doll house and even let me watch Oprah with her for a few minutes here and there. Winston was also very kind and loved to share his knowledge with the neighbourhood kids! Amazing people xoxo RIP

My deepest sympathy to Libby’s family.
Our wonderful Libby.
Everyone who ever met Libby and had the pleasure of spending time with her, will never ever forget her. Libby was unique in every way, she was a joy to be with!
Her incredible stories of her life experiences I never tired of listening to.
That wonderful sense of humour, that was so Libby and her ability to be unflappable in any situation. Some of which we shared with each other at her Celebration of Life!
That occasion was beautiful so lovely and truly refective of Libby. Even though sad to say good bye, it was an exquisite good bye fitting of our wonderful friend Libby. Forever in our hearts never to be forgotten!
Thank you Libby’s family for the amazing beautiful send off.
Jo-Anne after years of not being able to sing, I have not stopped singing :
“Will you Go Lassie Go.”The whole week end after, I accompanied everyone I could find on YouTube!
Thank you so very much! Marie.

So sorry to learn of Libby's passing.
I was fortunate enough to have Libby as a student in several courses I taught, both for Trent University and for the Oshawa Senior Citizens Council. I also acted as Libby's Supervisor of Studies at Trent for several years--not that she required much supervision! I know I speak for other instructors, some of whom are no longer with us, when I say that Libby was a wonderful student and a thoroughly delightful person. She was one of those rare individuals who spontaneously generated a sense of community among those around her: a very special quality, indeed. Her incisive intelligence was always buffered or polished by a wry sense of humour and genuine insight into the human condition. Her conversation, formal or casual, was endearing and memorable. We are poorer for her absence, and she will be missed.
Sincerest sympathy to the family.

My sincere condolences to Libby's family and friends. She will be dearly missed.
Eight years ago this week I was at Trent when I saw Libby receive her last degree. I had always admired her as a well spoken, well dressed and always an interesting writer and I was able to congratulate her on her accomplishment.
Since that day we have spent many hours in class, writing groups and social activities. Our extended phone calls often followed her concern for my well being.
Libby was very intelligent, well read with an extraordinary memory, a quick wit and possessor of the most active imagination I have ever known. Her imagination allowed her to compose delightfully quirky stories which were always entertaining.
Libby lived and loved every day to the fullest. She loved her children and grandchildren with all her heart and was so proud of their accomplishments. She loved her husband Win and still missed him.
I will miss Libby for a long time but I have wonderful memories.
Rest in Peace Libby. I know your slice of Heaven will be well supplied with robust red wine and decadent chocolate deserts.

Our beautiful Libby! I had the pleasure of working with Libby during my early daycare days. She was the greatest “boss”one could ever have! Her compassion for her staff and the children was always evident! I will never forget early in my pregnancy coming into work and becoming so sick. Libby took me to the kids sick room laid me down and covered me in her fur coat! Thank you Libby for lessons taught, for your spunk, and never give up attitude!
