At the age of 82, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, October 19, 2013 at his home following a lengthy battle with heart disease. Now reunited with his one true love, Kathleen (1999). Hugh is survived by his doting daughters Linda (Victor Kneitas), and Kim (Ian Morrison). He also leaves behind six grandchildren: Jennifer (Brian), Greg, Cameron, Connor, Mack and Reilly who will miss their “Bobby” dearly; as well as brother Ron (Ruby), sister Jean (Ken) and predeceased brother Ken. Born and raised in Essex, England, the son of Len and Min West, Hugh later moved to Paisley, Scotland where he met his sweetheart and started his family before immigrating to Toronto, Canada. After serving with the 3rd Battalion, Coldstream Guards, Hugh was gainfully employed at Crothers Caterpillar for 25 years. He was also a proud 20 year member of the Ontario Regiment Museum and Ferret Club. Hugh not only took pride in his years of service, but truly relished the friends he made during his time at Crothers and “the club”. An avid Blue Jays fan, connoisseur of single malt scotch and auto enthusiast, the family will absolutely miss time spent watching ball games, learning about Sherman tanks and conversing about cars with Hugh, a true man’s man. He exuded enormous strength, dignity and kindness throughout his life and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Forever in our thoughts, we hold our memories dear. At Hugh’s request, there will be no formal Funeral, however a Celebration of Life will take place at a later date. Arrangements entrusted to OSHAWA FUNERAL HOME, 847 King Street West (905-721-1234). Memorial donations would be greatly appreciated for Ontario Regiment Museum of Oshawa or The Heart and Stroke Foundation.
