With the joy of a life well lived, we announce the passing of John Michael Sullivan, who left us peacefully on May 14, 2026. John has returned to the side of his darling Rosina, joining hands once again to laugh, reminisce, and watch over the family they cherished so dearly.
John was a devoted father to Kathleen Ehrenberg (Klaus) and Andrew Sullivan (Catherine), and a loving step father to Meghan Till (Andrew), Alannah Morrow, Jesse Sweet, and Matthew Sweet (Julia). He was a proud and playful grandfather—a no-mercy tutor of board and card games—to Arden and Nia Ehrenberg, Sam, Jack, and Ben Sullivan, Brady Till, and Noah, Jacob, and Sam Sweet.
Predeceased by his siblings Peter, Jim, and Margaret, John now joins them at the great card table in the sky. If you hear thunder in the sky, it’s likely the four of them sitting at the card table, each trying to yell over top of the other.
Born in Toronto to Gregory and Ada Sullivan (nee Pinfold), John grew up in a lively household where humour, loyalty, and a strong work ethic were woven into daily life. He carried those values with him throughout his life, offering them generously to everyone he met.
John tirelessly worked his way through the ranks of the TTC, Grey Coach, and finally GO Transit. As union president for GO Transit he was a passionate and skilled negotiator and would eventually end his career in a managerial role. Many of his most treasured accomplishments, along with several close friends, and including finding his true love Rosina, were born of these years. He was known for his sharp mind and wit, and for being firm but fair.
In retirement, John-Dear embraced the simple joys he loved most: time with family, sharing meals, yelling at the Bills, CNN, playing poker or bridge with friends. He found peace in simplicity and routine, comfort in connection, and happiness in watching his family grow.
A Celebration of a life full of love and laughter will be held. Date and time will be added.
In Lieu of Flowers
Be sure to raise a glass in his honour whenever possible. Goodness knows, he would love to be there with you to share it.
