I remember him with great fondness as a very colorful and caring man who made his mark on our neighborhood for many years.  His passing marks the end of a very significant era in our own little part of East Whitby.  Those were the days! I will never forget you, Joe.  You were one of a kind.

I was very sorry to hear of Joe's passing. He was a great guy, a wonderful uncle to me, and will be missed by all who knew him. I will always remember his sense of humor and his good natured kidding. I'd like to share a story that most don't know. When I was about 7 or 8 years old I was out on the front steps of Grandma/pa Hamer's house talking with Uncle Joe, when Great-Aunt Lottie (Grandpa Hamer's sister, for you youngins that wouldn't have known her) rolled onto the driveway in her new '57 Volkswagen Beetle. Uncle Joe and I got up and went over to greet her and inspect her new ride, of which she was clearly very proud. We exchanged pleasantries, and complemented her on the funny little vehicle. At this point, Joe, who was a very robust young man, bent down, reached under the front bumper with both hands, and proceeded to hoist the front end off the ground several feet. He then craned his neck to get a glimpse under the car, and exclaimed “why Aunt Lottie, it doesn't have an engine!” The look on Aunt Lottie's face was priceless. Now I do believe she knew it had an engine, and that it was in the rear, so her facial expression was, no doubt, one of amazement at Joe's ability to thus elevate her vehicle. I, as well, was impressed, and had a good laugh. On another note, Joe and I had a long standing joke that if I were to ever become engaged to be married, he was to be notified first, before all others. Perhaps his passing now precludes any possible nuptials on my part. To Helen, Scott, Anne, and the grandkids; my condolences. My thoughts are with you.

Joe always had a 'Great story' to tell, this was true when Joe and I where helping Brian Winters Publish his "Chronicles of Whitby" 
 Joe's van was a staple throughout the town and was always highly visible.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you Anne, Andrew and family.  I fondly recall many interesting and animated conversations with Joe over the years at St. Mark's UC - he was one of those "rare characters" and it was a privilege to have met him.
