Steve “Papa” Castro was born on Thanksgiving Day in 1959 in Edinburg, Texas to Frank and Connie Castro. Soon after Steve was born, his family moved to Connell Washington and then in 1968, Frank and Connie moved their family to Othello. There, they built a wonderful family together and it was then that the meaning of family was installed into Steve. The Castro’s would often make trips to and from Oregon to spend time with Tia Tila and Tio Joe, the families bonded together and as Connie says, they were one big family.
As a kid, Steve was often found taking care of others and always lending a helping hand. Even at a young age, he was always there to help whether it was helping fix a friends flat tire or lending his ear. He always thought of others, for example his brother Frank remembers when he had broken his arm and the way Steve distracted him from the pain was to pretend to teach him how to drive.
Also as a child, his passion for the Washington Huskies started with Pete Taggeres, his boys and his father Frank getting together and watching Huskie Football. Once he saw the marching band, there was no turning back. It was then that he truly started to bleed purple.
It was in 6th grade that Steve and Minnie met and became inseparable, it quickly became a fairytale love story and together they have shared 35 years of marriage. They were married in 1978 on a hot July day; in 1981, Steve found his first true calling and that was being a father. There was nothing that he did better than taking care of his daughters. As daughters, we remember his love, his passion and his willingness to always make sure we were happy. Besides his daughters, his granddaughters were the light of his life. He loved to rock them to sleep, sing to them, play with them and most importantly see them smile.
There is no doubt that Steve took pride in being a man of his word, always being genuine, helping others and giving 100% in everything he did. Steve loved his wife, his kids, his grandbabies, and his son in laws, the Lord, and the Huskies. It may have not been in that exact order but he was too much of a gentleman to tell anyone.
Living in his legacy is: his mother, wife, and children: Maria Castro of Othello, Rita (Tony Copeland) Castro of Moses Lake Washington, and Abigail (Pablo Jr.) Macouzet of Kennewick Washington. Steve is also survived by his grandchildren: Loryn Martha Castro of Othello, Emma Lee Angilique Long of Othello, Adrian & Lyric Copeland of Moses Lake, and siblings: Wally Castro of Othello, Ray (Cheryn) Castro of Des Moines, Washington, Frank Jr. (Charlene) Castro of Santa Clara California, Mary (Larry) Aubrey of Othello, David (Victoria) Castro of Othello, and by his in-laws: father and mother-in-law Roy and Nancy Ramos of Seattle Washington, sister-in-law Ginny (Ruben) Salazar of Seattle Washington, Sister-in-law Brenda Ramos of Othello Washington, and brother-in-law Roy Jr. (Marni) Ramos of Renton Washington and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
