Auntie Patsy & Family
So sorry to hear about Uncle Bernie.
He will be remembered with kindness.
We spoke of him at Auntie Georginas'
this week. Shirley Lucyk Balcarres, Sask.

For those who just met him, he was known as Bernard Shubaly.  

To the wife, friend, neighbour or even the acquaintance, he was Bernie. To the son or daughter, he was Dad. To the grandchildren, like I, he was our Dido. All who knew Dido addressed him by a different title and will have known Dido from a different perspective based on the precious experiences we spent with him and the different periods in his lifetime.   

I loved Dido. We all did. We respected him deeply for who he was and what he stood for. We knew him to be a wonderful man with an incredible influence on myself and my father as well as countless others. I am certain of this. I knew him to be a teacher and rather a prophet. When I wanted to ask just about anything whether it be religion or history based, I could ask Dido and he’d tell. He told it from the perspective of someone with immense insight.  Insight I have never seen before. He was extremely wise and had a deep understanding on so many levels, in so many aspects.   

His generosity extended far beyond the family but, as I am only one individual I can only see a small portion of its magnitude. Always generous and caring, he would make us feel welcome in the Shubaly home. On special occasions, he would leave a chair unoccupied in case an unsuspected guest, a stranger was in need of his aid. He was the Good Samaritan. He never turned anyone away or rejected a soul. He gave us all the feeling of inclusion in his presence.  

He was talented in that he would make all kinds of interesting creations in his workshop. He built many articles for my family. I received a stool with my initials on it from Dido. He also carved bowls made of exotic wood. I remember being a young child on one account and putting the finish on some of them with my cousins. 

When I was small, I had a dream that someone had eaten all my strawberries.  Though such a simple and trivial event, Dido was the first to purchase two plentiful baskets for me. This was common of him. He gave so much yet took very little. All he asked from me was to share my accomplishments and the state of my education. In return, he would fill my head with so much knowledge, stories of the past, things that were unique to any other I’ve heard before. Some of the best advice I’ve ever heard was shared by my grandfather.     

When things weren’t going as hoped in life, he would radiate such optimism and make whatever situation we faced cease to loom over our heads. He’d make us laugh. He was a lover of sweets and sweet things which is probably why he liked to care for flowers and have his share of delicious treats when it was possible. He even made treats for us dishes like: kluski and borscht.  
 
His support and care helped many individuals through addictions and difficult times in their lives. He was inquisitive throughout his entire life always learning and observing, so that he could share his experiences and knowledge with all of us. 

He was organized, so organized that everything was arranged, sorted and counted.  Things were labelled in jars, put in drawers, containers, envelopes, folders and binders. Everything he laid his hands on found a place where he saw fit. Everything could run smoother similar to clockwork in this way. 

He was a successful man who became this way through a beautiful mind, an excellent memory, a keen eye, a kind and humble heart, a diligent hand, a way with words and a strong relationship with God. Not once did he lose faith. He was a fighter, a patriotic warrior and in my eyes a saint even in his final days.  

However, when it was his time; he knew. Through insight and God’s will, he was sure to tell us how much he would miss us in advance.  “And I will miss you...” he said with grave emotion. Even so, he waited. As father stated yesterday, he waited for the day the Lord would call him. He was united with the Lord on the Lord’s Day.  Dido’s legacy will always live on in our hearts.   

Today, we celebrate his life on earth with us and his entry into heaven where he has found eternal peace. We love Dido and for years to come we need to make him proud.  Dido wanted us to be the best we can and find our own form of success.   

This is not farewell.   

We will meet Dido again where he dines in paradise.  Until then, we remember.

It was with great sadness that I learned of the passing of Bernie. It has been so many years since I have had contact with your family yet the memories of our times together, be it at home or at the camp still come to mind every so often.
