As long-time friends of both Colin and Sylvia, we were so saddened to find (after an internet search) that both had passed over this  past year and a half. 
We came to know them both through my coming to help Colin as an associate priest at All Souls in the 1980's. Colin and I shared academic theological backgrounds, as well as both of us later having headed theological colleges. 
We quickly became good  friends, espcially in humour. My wife Susan became one of his Wardens, and also helped on the board of the Group Home. We often shared meals (and wry humour) as two couples, including meeting both Mark and Clare. 
After he left All Souls, we expanded the group with the Rev. Fred Cross and the Rev. Don Bellway of St. Leonards. 
Colin could (and would )  give a very frank assessment of almost anything (which he often publicly  expressed  in a Letter to the Editor of the Anglican Journal), but his humorous perspective  always balanced it off, and was kindly. Sylvia also had her own dry  humour, and all these conversations  - over many libations - were scintillating indeed!  
We miss them both, but look back and celebrate many fine years together of mutually  engaging conversation, friendship and, above all, good laughs and chuckles. 
We feel for Mark and Clare, having lost two fine parents in such a short period of time. 
But we share appreciation for such good lives, well lived....
May we share with them "...the peace  that  passeth understanding...."

Mark and Clare,
I am so sad to hear that my beloved mentor, Colin, has died.  I was a student of his when he was at All Souls, Lansing.  We became friends and I will always cherish his sense of humour, his intellectual rigour, his gift of hospitality and his charming English ways.  My wife Diane and I have many happy memories of sharing the hospitality of Colin and Sylvia's home. He was an inspiration to me and I will miss him greatly.

Dearest Colin,
It's Irene and you have known me since your brother Tony brought me  home to your home when I was 13 years old. You would sit in the front room listening to classical music. Your concentration was remarkable. 

Throughout your Royal Navy training we often welcomed you and your friends to our home in Leamington and we were delighted when you found your soul mate Sylvia and settled down to married life. Your Love of sailing was shared with Tony. Sylvia ensured I was well looked after. 
 
I made many visits over the years, some with Jonathan. The one that stands out for me was when we went to your island on the lake and enjoyed barbecue in the evening and malt whisky. 

I went on my first cruise to Alaska with you and your friends. I shared a cabin with Clare and it was a very special time.

Dear Mark and Clare, I was sad to hear of your Father's death. He was my professor of the Gospel of St. Mark, and  he was a wonderful teacher.  He was the priest at All Soul's, and I followed in his footsteps ( by then the parish was renamed the Incarnation) . He was remembered fondly by the parish. He founded NYDP Group home on the Church property which is the home to 10 people with multiple disabilities. It is a wonderful home and the staff are amazing. I will always admire your Father's vision for starting it.
I keep you in my thoughts and prayers in your loss.

I was saddened to learn of Colin's death.  In the late 1980s Colin was Director of the Program Resources Department of the Anglican Diocese of Toronto: I was part of the staff team when he became Director and we worked together for a number of years.  His intelligence and impish sense of humour were great gifts to the department and I learned much from his unique management style.  He entertained us on his boat on the lake and we enjoyed a few good drinks and fine meals together.  My deepest condolences to his family.  

Susie and I were so sad to learn of Colin's death. We have a family tradition dating from a very special sailing trip that Colin and Sylvia took us on in the 1980s. We didn't know either of them very well at this time and we were slightly daunted at the prospect of spending a week with the Reverend Canon Dr Proudman. After our first day afloat we moored to a landing stage in the 1000 Islands on Lake Ontario and Colin announced that he would "Perform a service to mankind." What was about to happen? Prayers on the lakeside? A sermon on the bow? No, Colin lifted the boards of the galley to reveal a well-stocked bar and announced "I declare the bar open!" Performing "a service to mankind" in our household is still something we look forward to.  

Colin and Sylvia were such fun and so hospitable on this occasion and every time we met them. Our only regret is that they lived so far away and we didn't get to spend more time together. 

Colin brought fun, adventure and good humour to our lives; he will be sorely missed. Our thought are with Mark and Clare.



I am so sad that I shall never see my dear ‘big bruvver’ again. I have so many happy memories of him and my sister-in-law, Sylvia, especially on the numerous occasions they visited us in Australia.
