A fifty-year journey struggling with the ravages of Multiple Sclerosis has finally come to its end. Dagmar Helga Manning died peacefully at the Ottawa Hospital in the evening of December 27, 2024. Dagmar was born on November 5, 1948 in Frankfurt am Main, Germany to Bruno Oswald and Hedwig Berta (Breyvogel) Schreyer.
In October 1951 the family immigrated to Canada and they settled in Toronto and Scarborough. While Dagmar was at the University of Toronto, she met Ralph and they were married on April 24, 1971 just before graduating with honours degrees in Modern Languages and Literatures. Dagmar went on to get her high school teaching qualifications from Althouse College at the University of Western Ontario and when they settled in Ottawa in 1972, she taught for many years, mostly at St. Pius X High School. MS made it too difficult for her to continue teaching and she retired to devote herself to raising her loving daughter.
Dagmar is survived by her husband of 53 years, Ralph; her daughter Karin and her husband Andrew Pullin and their two children, Spencer and Evelyn whom Dagmar unequivocally adored. She is also survived by her sister Ingrid (the late Don) McKercher and her niece Alison (Michael) Adamowicz and their sons, Nolan and Andrew; her sister-in-law Doreen (Ross) Maybee and their sons Patrick and Owen and dear friends Frances and Suzan. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her parents-in-law, C. Russell and Margaret (Krause) Manning and her sister-in-law, Audrey Golchuk.
Cremation has taken place and Dagmar’s ashes will be buried in the spring in the family plot in Maple Cemetery in Vaughan, Ontario. There will be no service but friends may pay their respects to the family for a memorial visitation on Sunday, January 5, 2025 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at McEvoy-Shields Funeral Home, 1411 Hunt Club Road.
