Ernest "Ernie" Leduc

À l'Hôpital Général d'Ottawa, le 4 avril 2022 est décédé à l'âge de 87 ans, M. Ernest Leduc, époux de Claire (née Gaulin). Ernest et Claire, des résidents de longue date de Kapuskasing, Ontario, sont déménagés à Casselman pour se rapprocher de leurs enfants. Ils auraient célébré leur 65ième anniversaire de mariage le 17 août. Ernest est né le 6 août 1934 à Latulipe, Québec. Il laisse dans le deuil son épouse, Claire, ses enfants Michel (Lyn Wright), Jocelyne (Gary Kowaluk), Suzanne (Pierre Perras), Francine (Dan Adamus) et Lise (Michel Jean). Il était le "pepère" adoré de ses petits-enfants Whitney (Seamus), Brian (Ashley), Wade (Kristen), Merissa (Claude), Jessica (Jordan), Stéphanie (Gio), Clay (Cindy), Caitlin (Matt), Kurtis, Dana, Samuel et William ainsi que de ses arrière petits-enfants Jaedan, Brodyn, Declan, Jonathan, Elisha, Samuel, Bria, Avery, Scarlett, Riley, Vale et Burke.

Ernest "Ernie" Leduc, age 87, of Casselman, Ontario, cherished husband of Claire (née Gaulin) passed away on Monday, April 4, 2022 at the Ottawa General Hospital. Ernie and Claire, who were going to celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary this year, were long-time residents of Kapuskasing, Ontario where they raised their family. Ernie was born on August 6, 1934 in Latulipe, Quebec. He is survived by his loving wife Claire and children, Michel (Lyn Wright), Jocelyne (Gary Kowaluk), Suzanne (Pierre Perras), Francine (Dan Adamus) and Lise (Michel Jean). He was adored by his grand-children Whitney (Seamus), Brian (Ashley), Wade (Kristen), Merissa (Claude), Jessica (Jordan), Stéphanie (Gio), Clay (Cindy), Caitlin (Matt), Kurtis, Dana, Samuel and William and great-grandchildren, Jaedan, Brodyn, Declan, Jonathan, Elisha, Samuel, Bria, Avery, Scarlett, Riley, Vale and Burke.

A visitation for Ernest will be held Sunday, April 10, 2022 from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM at McEvoy-Shields Funeral Home and Chapel, 1411 Hunt Club Road, Ottawa, ON K1V 1A6. A memorial service will follow at 3:00 PM followed by a reception at 4:00 PM. The family is asking everyone to please wear their mask and to keep it on at all times.

Ernest Rogers Joseph Leduc (6 août 1934 – 4 avril 2022)

Né le 6 août 1934 à Latulipe, Québec, tout près du Lac Témiscamingue, un des 16 enfants de Blanche Vallée et Octave Leduc. Suite au décès de sa mère alors qu’il avait 3 ans, les prochaines années furent composées de séjours temporaires chez des ‘familles d’accueil’ des fermes avoisinantes et Ernest gagnait sa pension à faire le train et d’autres tâches. Ce n’est qu’après ces années d’enfance plus difficiles qu’il fut accueilli par la famille Pilon où il a connu les meilleures années de son enfance et pour la première fois, il se sentait aimé. Dans sa quête pour gagner sa vie, il s’est rendu à Kapuskasing vers l’âge de 15 ans pour rejoindre ses frères. Il s’est fait embaucher comme camionneur par Raoul Gaulin et se rendait de Winnipeg à Toronto alors qu’il ne parlait aucun mot en anglais. C’est à Kapuskasing qu’il a rencontré la femme et l’amour de sa vie, la nièce de Raoul, Claire Gaulin, la fille d’Edgar et de Marie-Jeanne (Laquerre). Le 17 août 1957, Claire et Ernest se sont mariés. Ils étaient plein d’amour, plein d’espoir et étaient déterminés à assurer une meilleure vie à leurs enfants. Leur complicité de couple était un véritable partenariat, chacun reconnaissant en l’autre l’atout qu’il apportait à leur rêve de bâtir une vie de famille comblée. À l’aide d’une hypothèque de 5 000 $, Ernest et Claire ont bâti leur maison à Kitigan, la ‘banlieue’ de Kapuskasing. Les prochaines années étaient comblées d’amour et de bonheur avec l’arrivée de leurs cinq enfants, Michel, Jocelyne, Suzanne, Francine et Lise.

Ernest a quitté le travail précaire de camionneur pour un travail plus stable à Spruce Falls Power & Paper Company où il a travaillé pour plus de 40 ans comme opérateur de machinerie lourde. C’est là qu’il a témoigné de tous les progrès technologiques dans l’industrie forestière, des chevaux, à la « bucksaw », la scie mécanique et enfin le « feller-buncher » et le « slasher ». Les semaines de travail au « camp 95 » le séparaient de sa famille pendant que Claire veillait au foyer, aux enfants et à son propre travail. Les habiletés d’Ernest à titre d’opérateur de machinerie étaient bien reconnues et même après sa retraite, on convoitait son expertise. La joie qu’Ernest ressentait à faire son métier ne pouvait que rivaliser avec la fierté et le bonheur qu’il ressentait d’être entouré de sa famille, ses gendres et sa brut, ses petits-enfants et plus tard, ses arrières petits-enfants. La vie d’un retraité était difficile pour Ernest car il n’avait jamais connu des loisirs ou des passe-temps. Jamais, il hésitait à donner un coup de main et son bonheur était à son comble lorsqu’il se sentait ‘utile’.

Il était un homme d’une grande simplicité, franc, fidèle, intègre et fiable. Il avait le don de reconnaître en ses enfants, leurs inquiétudes et leurs craintes, parfois avant qu’elles ou il pouvaient le reconnaître en eux-mêmes. Ses mots étaient justes et jamais superflus. Il était notre étoile du nord, notre ancre et notre boussole et il nous manquera profondément. Il laisse dans le deuil, sa bien-aimée, Claire, ses enfants Michel (Lyn Wright), Jocelyne (Gary Kowaluk), Suzanne (Pierre Perras), Francine (Dan Adamus) et Lise (Michel Jean), ses petits-enfants et leurs conjoint(e)s Brian (Ashley), Merissa (Claude), Caitlin (Matt), Whitney (Seamus), Wade (Kristen), Stéphanie (Gio), Jessica (Jordan), Clay Wright (Cindy), Kurtis, Dana, Samuel et William et ses précieux arrières petits-enfants Jaedan, Brodyn, Bria, Declan, Avery, Scarlett, Riley, Vale, Burke, Jonathan, Elisha and Samuel.

Ernest Rogers Joseph Leduc (August 6, 1934 – April 4, 2022)

Born August 6, 1934 in Latulipe, Quebec, near Lake Témiscamingue, one of the 16 children of Blanche Vallée and Octave Leduc. Following the death of his mother when he was 3 years old, the next few years were made up of temporary stays with ‘foster families’ on the neighbouring farms and Ernest earned his keep as a farm hand and by doing other chores. It was only after these more difficult childhood years that he was welcomed by the Pilon family where he experienced the best years of his childhood and for the first time in his life, he felt loved. In his quest to earn a living, he traveled to Kapuskasing around the age of 15 to join his brothers. He got hired as a truck driver by Raoul Gaulin and drove long-haul from Winnipeg to Toronto even though he didn't speak a word of English. It was in Kapuskasing that he met the love of his life, Raoul's niece, Claire Gaulin, daughter of Edgar and Marie-Jeanne (Laquerre). On August 17, 1957, Claire and Ernest were married. They were full of love, full of hope and determined to ensure a better life for their children. Their complicity as a couple was a true partnership, each recognizing in the other the strengths they brought to their dream of building a fulfilled family life. With the help of a $5,000 mortgage, Ernest and Claire built their home in Kitigan, the “suburb” of Kapuskasing. The next few years were filled with love and happiness with the arrival of their five children, Michel, Jocelyne, Suzanne, Francine and Lise.

Ernest left the precarious work as a truck driver for a more stable salaried job at Spruce Falls Power & Paper Company where he worked as a heavy equipment operator. It was there that he witnessed all the technological advancements in the logging industry, from horses, to the bucksaw, the chain saw and finally the feller-buncher and the slasher. The weeks of work at "Camp 95" separated him from his family while Claire took care of the household, the children and her own work. Ernest's skills as a machinery operator were well recognized and even after his retirement, his expertise was coveted by contractors. The joy that Ernest felt in doing his job could only rival the pride and joy he felt in being surrounded by his family, his sons-in-law and his daughter-in-law, his grandchildren and their partners and later, his great-grandchildren. The life of a retiree was difficult for Ernest because he had never spent much time on hobbies. He never hesitated to lend a hand and his happiness was at its height when he felt 'useful'.

He was a man of great simplicity, frank, fiercely loyal, honest and reliable. He had the gift of recognizing in his children, their concerns and their fears, sometimes before they could recognize it in themselves. His words were few but so insightful and wise. He was our North Star, our anchor and our compass and he will be deeply missed. He is survived by his beloved, Claire, his children Michel (Lyn Wright), Jocelyne (Gary Kowaluk), Suzanne (Pierre Perras), Francine (Dan Adamus) and Lise (Michel Jean), his grandchildren Brian ( Ashley), Merissa (Claude), Caitlin (Matt), Whitney (Seamus), Wade (Kristen), Stephanie (Gio), Jessica (Jordan), Clay Wright (Cindy), Kurtis, Dana, Samuel and William and his precious great grandchildren Jaedan, Brodyn, Bria, Declan, Avery, Scarlett, Riley, Vale, Burke, Jonathan, Elisha and Samuel.

The family will welcome you beginning at noon, Sunday, April 10, 2022 and a memorial service will follow in the chapel at 3:00 p.m. at McEvoy Shields Funeral Home, 1411 Hunt Club Road, Ottawa, Ontario.
