Frederick “Fred” Seldon Gillis, born March 7, 1964, died peacefully at the Ottawa General Hospital surrounded by his family on April 20, 2018 at the age of 54 after a courageous battle with ALS, which he faced with courage and dignity. He will lovingly be remembered as a devoted husband, father, brother, uncle and a loyal friend to many.
Fred was born in Thompson, Manitoba and spent his life dedicated to the service of others as a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Fred retired from the RCMP in 2018 at the rank of Sergeant having worked in four provinces across Canada: B.C., SK, ON and AB. Aside from the RCMP and his family, Fred’s true passion was hockey and many will remember him as a player nicknamed “Fast Freddy or Le Grande Orange”, a hockey coach, an assistant coach, a team manager and the odd time as a boisterous fan.
Fred will be forever missed by his loving wife, Lana Gregoire, and their three children; sons Nolan and Cory and daughter Lindsay. He will be sadly missed by his sister, Barbara (Al Pilszek) Gillis and nephew James, and his brother Leon Gillis, nephews Matthew and Sean and their mother Sarah Gillis along with all of his immediate and extended family and friends. Fred was predeceased by his mother and father Josephine and Garfield Gillis.
A celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 5, 2018 at the Larry Robinson Arena – 2785 8th Line Road, Metcalfe, Ontario. At Fred’s request, no suits or formal wear are to be worn for the celebration of life, please wear your favourite hockey jerseys.
The funeral and interment will be held at the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Depot Division Cemetery, 5907 Dewdney Avenue, Regina, SK at a later date.
We want to thank the Bruyère Hospital Palliative Care Unit and the Ottawa General Hospital for the loving care given to Fred and his family.
Fred has been a strong supporter and advocate for ALS Awareness and Research. The family has asked that any memorial donations please be made in support of Team GILLIS for the 2018 ALS Walk in Ottawa.
