Garry Robert Joseph Smith was the soulmate and husband of 45 years of Christine (Langlois), and the adoring father of Patrick (Charlotte White) and his dog Cleo. He is also survived by sisters Lorraine (Frank Schleyer), Faye (Gary Asselin - deceased), Dianne, and many cherished nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Garry was the son of the late Allen John Smith and the late Mary (Patacairk), and is predeceased by sisters Theresa, Gail, Joan, June, and brothers Kenneth, Allen, Wayne, and William.
Garry was a multi-talented music lover who could play guitar, drums, harmonica, and sing. He was a self-declared handyman, ready to help anyone and everyone with their car troubles or home renovations.
Garry was an enthusiastic and faithful sports fan who could be found regularly cheering on the Ottawa Senators (NHL) and the Ottawa Redblacks (CFL) from the stands or the couch. As a teenager and young adult, he enjoyed playing touch football. Even at the age of 69, Garry played hockey on Friday nights with the FBOT league.
Since graduating from Algonquin College in 1978, Garry worked as a mechanical engineering technologist. He devoted the last 32 years to proudly working for the Department of National Defence.
We encourage anyone able who had the privilege of knowing and loving Garry to join us in a celebration of his life starting at 10am on Saturday, August 24, 2024 at St. Theresa Roman Catholic Church (95 Somerset St W, Ottawa). In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society or the CHEO Foundation.
