David, I just discovered this news in my attempt to contact you all about the upcoming season and some changes that have taken place in my world. I'm stunned, shocked, and heartbroken. Gaye was an incredibly kind woman and a joy to be around. She will be missed immensely. I will be in touch.

Belatedly, I have just learned of Gaye's passing.  I knew her many years ago, when she & Dave lived in Victoria & Gavin was a lovable pre-schooler.  Gaye & Gavin were frequent visitors at the Langford Library where I worked.  Gaye's love of learning, her zest for life, her compassion for people, her deep commitment to community & the environment , her joy in being a mother were among the attributes that made her such an exceptional person, such a pleasure & inspiration to be with.  We became good friends, & a huge hole was left in my life when the
McOnie's moved to Ottawa.

My life was so enriched by my friendship with Gaye, & it appears that many people felt the same.  My heart goes out to Dave & Gavin who will, I hope, in time take great comfort from the memories & inspiration acquired from their wife/mom.  She was beyond incredible, & I am so very sorry she is gone.

Dear Dave and Gavin. As you know, we are devastated by the sudden loss of Gaye. Our memories are a patchwork of going to the park when the boys were small, of Metchosin pre-school, of experimenting with the latest low fat, low sugar, low sodium, low carb recipes and finally giving up and taking the boys to McDonalds for a milkshake!...of laughing...of talking about our families thousands of miles away and how much we missed them, and of family get-togethers. Gaye's gift of connecting to everyone she met is unique and even after weeks of not talking, when we did it was as if it was yesterday. Her immense pride in both of you shone through everything she said and she would be so proud of you as you go through this next chapter. God bless you both and see you soon, Faith and David

Words cannot express the depth of sorrow felt with the passing of a loved one. Gaye was a much cherished member of the community and a dark cloud fell over us with her news of her passing. However, we can find solace in the fact that in her lifetime she has touched so many and will remain immortal as long as we keep her memory close to our hearts.

Gaye and Dave welcomed me into their home with open arms nearly three years ago. They were my surrogate family here in Ottawa. Gaye was the most caring, unselfish and loving person I have ever met. Gaye was one of the finest people I have ever known.  She had a wonderful way of caring that made everyone who knew her feel good in her presence. It is at a time like this when we realize just how precious life is.  Gaye lived every day to the fullest and was one of the most unselfish and giving people I have ever known. It isn't possible to define what Mrs McOnie was to me. She was more than a neighbour, more than a babysitter, more than even an aunt. She was the other half of my mom. She was wonderful and the memory of her kindness and intrepid spirit will continue to inspire so many people. We were all privileged to have known her.

David & Gavin:  I was shocked to hear about Gaye's passing.  Mark came over to tell me as I was outside doing some leaf raking.  I will remember her with her great smile and hello whenever she was out for a walk or visiting neighbours.  Always a wave whenever she was outside as I was driving by.  My sincere sympathy to both of you on your loss of your beloved wife/mother.  She certainly will be missed by her many neighbours on Cork St.

Gill and I were deeply saddened and shocked by Gaye's passing. I immediately phoned Gill in Edinburgh who was doubly upset at being out of the country and not able to attend either the reception or the service.
