Gerald was a loving father to Luc, Anne and Monique, and an adoring grandfather to Benoît, Renée, Deanna and Kalika. He also leaves his siblings and in-laws to mourn him; Lucie (late Ted), André (Shirley), Ernest (Aileen), and Lillianne (late Peter) as well as many nephews and nieces.
He was predeceased by his wife of 47 years, Irene Lafrance (née Doyle), his brother Roméo (late Suzanne) and sisters Jeanne (late Ernest) and Edna (late Xavier).
Gerry was the eldest boy of 8 children born to the late François Lafrance and Emilienne Bissonnette in Pembroke, Ontario. Despite moving to Ottawa in 1971 for work, a part of his heart always remained.
Gerry’s career in the public service, starting in Forestry allowed him to spend time in the great outdoors. His love of the outdoors carried through into retirement where he could often be found in the bush or walking his Vanier neighbourhood for hours on end.
Gerry was kind, soft spoken, sincerely listened to what people had to say and was truly caring. He dedicated much of his time volunteering in his community. Helping with the maple sugar bush in Vanier was a highlight for him, however the Centre d’Accueil Champlain and his local parish were at the heart of his volunteering for many years.
We are so very grateful for the care Gerry received during his multiple stays at Hôpital Montfort as well as the Queensway Carleton and Ottawa General hospitals. We would like to extend sincere gratitude to Home and Community Care Support Services, as well as PSWs Sarah, Sam, Rose, Stanley and Olu. We have been especially moved by the genuine kindness and affection shown to Dad by the entire staff at Pharmacie Vanier where he was always greeted with a warm “Bonjour Monsieur Lafrance!”, and by his friends and neighbours. Thank you to Roger, Dave and Pierre. Dad could always count on you. Odette, thank you for assisting in Dad’s day-to-day care in his final days. You truly have been his guardian angel.
Visitation will be on Friday, March 8th, 2024 from 10am to 1pm at Racine, Robert & Gauthier Funeral Home, 180 Montreal Rd. This will be followed by a funeral service at 1pm in the funeral home chapel.
In memory of Gerry, please consider lighting a candle and saying a prayer/rosary on behalf of all departed souls. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to the Shepherds of Good Hope via the following link: https://www.sghottawa.com/
