After courageously facing months of multiple health challenges, Rod passed away peacefully on October 7 at the Ottawa Civic Hospital. He is predeceased by his parents, William and Agnes Ferguson, and by his adored wife of 43 years, Dianne. He leaves behind his beloved son, Chris (Diane), and his cherished grandchildren, Emily (Zi) and Thomas. He will be greatly missed by his brother Bill, his sister Judi, his sister-in-law Judy Day, and an extended network of family, friends, and neighbours.
Rod was fortunate to share the last 15 years of his life with a truly remarkable woman, Gail Kennedy. Not only was she a devoted partner, but her own children and grandchildren also brought added joy to his life. He was blessed to have had so many people who loved and respected him during his 84 years. There was no one quite like him.
Rod was born and raised in Smiths Falls, Ontario, but chose to study and raise his family in Ottawa. He completed his degree in Commerce and Education, as well as a Master’s degree in Outdoor Education. He began a distinguished career as a teacher and later as principal at MacSkimming Outdoor Education Centre, where he worked for 25 years. The centre always held a special place in his heart. He finished his teaching career as principal at Viscount Alexander, retiring in 1998. Rod loved his work and often said that his job was made so much easier and more enjoyable by the tremendous staff he was fortunate to work with. The feeling was mutual; he was deeply respected and admired by those who worked alongside him.
His retirement years were devoted to the other great loves in his life, foremost among them his family. He retired specifically so he could help look after his grandchildren, who meant everything to him. The feeling was mutual. His other passions included travel, golf, curling, bridge, and—much to his family’s amusement and occasional horror—the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to either the University of Ottawa Heart Institute or the Bruyère Health Foundation.
As Emily and Thomas used to tell their Poppa,
“We love you Big Much.”
