Dear son of the late Tom and Ellen (née Freeman) Toivanen, Ron was a passionate outdoorsman who enjoyed kayaking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and hiking. Through his dedication to helping and bettering his community, he was awarded the Paul Harris award from the Bathurst Rotary Club. He especially cherished his trips to the family cottage, where he enjoyed swimming, watersports, and authentic Finnish saunas.
As a proud father, Ron loved teaching, participating, and supporting his sons in activities such as fishing, baseball, swimming, Scouting, canoeing, camping, and mountain biking. He taught his sons the values of a good work ethic by ensuring work was done before play.
Ron is survived by his loving sons, Mark (Diana) and Peter. Cherished grandfather of James and William. He is also survived by his sister Marilynn Bass (Bryan), nephew Michael Bass (Sarah), great-nephews Logan and Dylan, his aunt Helen, and many cousins. Predeceased by his parents, his uncles Into, George, Jack, Maurice, and Walter, aunts Barbara and Helvi, his niece Nicole, and his great-nephew Sam. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
The family would like to thank his close friends in Bathurst, New Brunswick for their assistance, care, and support. A heartfelt thank you to the doctors, nurses, and staff for your kindness, help, and care at Montfort Hospital in Ottawa and Hôpital régional Chaleur in Bathurst, as well as to the staff at Windsor Park in Ottawa and Résidences Vienneau in Bathurst.
In keeping with his wishes, Ron was cremated and a private Celebration of Life ceremony will be held at the family cottage with interment to follow at Little Lake Cemetery in Peterborough, Ontario. Donations may be made in his name to The Heart and Stroke Foundation, The Canadian Cancer Society, or The Bathurst Rotary Club in lieu of flowers.
