A great friend and advisor has left us. My association with Bert was in so many ways. We met while he was CO of 763 Comm Regt Ottawa and its predecessors, while I was with 709 Comm Regt Toronto and its predecessors. Then we worked together at the Royal Canadian Signals Association and the Canadian Forces Communication & Electronics Association. Bert always was a super supporter of the Signals / Communication Reserve. His presence, advice and support will be greatly missed.

A great man has left us.  As a recipient of the Canadian Decoration with four clasps, Burt made a lifelong contribution to his country and was further recognized with the Order of Military Merit in the degree of officer. Bert Lerner left Canada and the Canadian Forces better by his presence.  He was my superior, my mentor, my colleague, my friend and confidant and my golf buddy.

Col Bert was an extremely intelligent officer and an astute judge of character.  He immediately liked or disliked people, although the latter would never know.  On more than one occasion he pointed me in the right direction.

Although his last tour of duty was with 763 (Ottawa) Communication Regiment as the Honourary Colonel, it must be remembered that he reached the rank of Colonel in the Canadian Forces through hard work and dedication to the Communication Reserve.  As the first Senior Communication Reserve Adviser to the Commander,  Canadian Forces Communication Command, he became involved with the CF throughout Canada and never lost the national perspective of the Communication Reserve.

At Hylands Golf Club, Bert was a fixture from April to October.  Out on Wednesdays with his gang, on Thursday with Gord Metcalfe and myself, and putting on weekends, perhaps his biggest regret was not being able to make full use of his new golf clubs this year.

I will miss this caring gentleman and dedicated officer but will remember him fondly for my years to come.

Colonel Lerner was a role model, friend, and mentor to me and he remains an inspiration to all members of our Regimental Family. Thank you sir for your advice, support, and sense of humour! Thank you especially for 55+ years of loyal service to Canada. We will gather to remember you and we will carry on the work you entrusted to us.

I'll always remember Colonel Lerner as such an outstanding example of an Officer and a Gentleman. He touched many of our lives over the years and will be remembered.

He was a wise and caring mentor.  Our former Honourary Colonel “ Bert” Lerner was a true leader and soldier’s friend touching many of our careers at 763.    He demonstrated genuine concern for all soldiers and will be truly missed from the Regimental family.  We are better people and soldiers due to his influence.  A true privilege and honour to have worked with you.
