Shawn Simpson, a beloved father, son, brother, partner, and friend, passed away on January 29, 2025, at the age of 56. A respected figure in Ottawa’s hockey community and sports media, Shawn’s warmth, humor, and deep love for the game left a lasting impact on those who knew him.
Born on August 10, 1968, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Shawn was adopted and raised across Canada before settling in Ottawa. From an early age, hockey was his passion. He played as a goaltender for the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds and the Oshawa Generals in the Ontario Hockey League. In 1986, he was drafted 60th overall by the Washington Capitals, becoming the first goaltender selected that year. He also had the honor of representing Canada at the 1987 World Junior Championship.
After a brief playing career, Shawn transitioned to the business side of the sport, serving as a scout and later as the director of hockey operations for the Washington Capitals. He also worked as general manager of the AHL’s Portland Pirates and later as a professional scout for the Toronto Maple Leafs. His greatest professional joy came in 2012 when he joined Ottawa’s TSN 1200 radio station, where his quick wit, deep hockey knowledge, and fearless honesty made him a beloved voice in the community.
Family Was His Heart
Though hockey was his career, family was everything to Shawn. He took immense pride in his sons, Shayne and Sloan, and always spoke about their achievements with admiration and joy. As a father, he loved discussing their academic and athletic accomplishments, celebrating their successes, and encouraging them to reach their full potential. He also formed a deep bond with his stepsons, Zachary and Matthew, whom he loved as his own, and enjoyed watching them grow into remarkable young men. Whether playing games, sharing laughs, or offering advice, Shawn treasured every moment with them.
Shawn found his greatest love and source of happiness in Mira Yasiri, his best friend, confidante, and biggest supporter. Their love was filled with adventure, laughter, and deep conversations. Traveling together brought Shawn true joy, especially when they found themselves on a beach, soaking in the sun and listening to the waves. He was also a history enthusiast, particularly fascinated by World War II and Russian history, often diving into books and documentaries and engaging in passionate debates. His endless curiosity made him an engaging conversationalist who could turn any discussion into something fascinating.
A Champion for Mental Health
Beyond his professional achievements, Shawn was open about his struggles with mental health, using his platform to raise awareness about depression and anxiety. His honesty encouraged others to seek help and sparked meaningful conversations. His legacy in hockey is undeniable, but his true impact was in the lives he touched through his kindness, wisdom, and willingness to share his own experiences.
Shawn is survived by his beloved sons Shayne Simpson (Washington State) and Sloan Simpson (Los Angeles, California); his loving father Lyle Simpson (Ottawa); his devoted brother Kurtis Simpson (Ottawa); his stepbrother Scott Sigurdson (Ottawa); his sisters Tammy Evans (Trenton) and Terra McSkimming (Toronto); his life partner Mira Yasiri (Ottawa); and his stepsons Zachary Himyary (Ottawa) and Matthew Himyary (Ottawa). His family, friends, and fans will forever cherish the warmth, humor, and love he brought into their lives.
A private family funeral will be held for Shawn.
In Lieu of Flowers to honor Shawn’s commitment to mental health advocacy, he wished for donations to be made to The Royal Ottawa Hospital. Contributions can be made through the donation link below, created by a young philanthropist whom Shawn always supported in the community.
Shawn will be deeply missed, but his passion, laughter, and love for family and community will live on in all who knew him.
